I have to keep track of too many different programs to be able to get good at any subset of them. I have to work with everything from MS Office, FileMaker, FinalCut, Adobe, web and e-mail. Probably about 2 dozen on a regular basis. And I have to oversee more than a dozen people who use those programs on a daily basis. Trying to teach "stupid" college students how to ACTUALLY use computers can be frustrating. Yes, I understand about what you're saying about REAL graphics pros and how they use programs versus the average "idiot." I'm not the average idiot but I'm not a pro, either. But, my point is this: Overwhelmingly, Windows users seem to be more naive about how to use a mouse and have more difficulty relating ideas such as "Opt/Alt-Click" than Mac users do. There are lots of programs that demand the use of chording and clicking to use them. I picked Adobe because it's one that lots of people know, PLUS it's cross-platform. I could have picked FinalCut Pro but, then, people could accuse me of using a Mac-specific program to illustrate the point. You're right. There are lots of marginally competent people out there who use both platforms. I'm trying really hard to learn better. But remember, I'm not speaking specifically how Adobe programs work or how FinalCut or any other program works. I'm talking about how people interact with their machines on the basic hand-to-mouse level and how they communicate about it when they talk to other people.  |  IP: Logged John Wilson Film God Posts: 5438 From: Sydney, Australia. It's more about how the average user of a certain type of system interacts with the computer. If I had my way, proprietary systems wouldn't be used. We'd all be using some flavor of Linux. None of that makes anyone an artist, certainly not a professional one. It's no different than some dude spending a fortune on high end golf clubs or the same guitar gear Zakk Wylde uses and then just sucking at either endeavor. Anyway I see lots of goofed up computer artwork provided by many different businesses and individuals on a frequent basis. I agree the vast majority of PC users don't know what they hell they're doing when using applications like Photoshop. Sadly not very many of the Mac folks do either. We're still stuck in that mindset of managers thinking the computers make the artwork so no one is better than any other at doing it. Why bother getting any formal education or training in things like layout, color theory, typography, etc.?  |  IP: Logged Mark J. She got hired, basically because she's "good" at Photoshop. One day, I'm driving down the street and I see one of the billboards she just had put up. The skin tones on the people were all greenish-yellow. They looked like crap! I saw her in the office and told her that all the colors on her ad went out of gamut. All I got was a blank stare. You're right. Too many people think that, because they can push a mouse around the screen, they can use a computer. Mac, PC or what-have-you... I call people like that, "Mouse Pushers." Most of the guys on this site are advanced computer users or use them as part of their profession. I expect to see a very low proportion of "mouse pushers" here. But I work at a liberal arts college. I see lots of work study students whose computer skills are rudimentary at best. Many are just mouse pushers. My reference was pointed more at people like that. On average, people who use PCs are less aware of user interface basics than people who use Macs. Linux users are in a class by themselves. 90% of the time, if I run into a students who even knows what Linux is, I can assume they are already head and shoulders above the rest.  |  IP: Logged Paul Mayer Oh get out of it Melvin, before it pulls you under! Was just at the SCAD library to look up some books that my college's library didn't have, their computers were Macs. Apparently, you can't go to scad, or possibly any art college without a mac. But anyhow, they only had 1 button, but they did have a really neat scroll ball. I could scroll up down left and right, and possibly even click it if I wanted. My PC mose has only a scoll wheel, that goes up and down and clicks. I am thinking about grabbing a Mac keyboard since it's cross compatible if I remember corretly. Even though it doesn't look like it, the thing has four buttons plus an X-Y scroll ball. The thing uses capacitive sensors to detect your finger position when you click it down. The Left-Mouse and Right-Mouse buttons are the left and right sides of the body. The Middle-Mouse button is activated by pressing on the scroll ball. There are two half-moon shaped cutouts on the sides of the body. Squeeze them together to access Button-Four. All four buttons are programmable. Access the "Apple > System Preferences... > Keyboard & Mouse" control panel to change the mouse's functions. I'm going to bet you a nickel that some doofus set the computer up with a mouse setting that doesn't have all the buttons programmed correctly. The Mighty Mouse seems a little weird to use at first but, once you get used to it, the thing grows on you. The Left-Mouse and Right-Mouse buttons are capacitive sensors hidden under the plastic chassis. The thing senses the locations of your fingers when you press on it.
