just wanted to say thanks for the replies and concerns to everyone. Anyone who didn't reply can meet my ex in hell!!!! [Wink]

I'm going to wait until after the holidays and see how things are. I go to get my kids next week, so hopefully my mind and body will calm down.

Is Crohns hereditary? My aunt has it.

Do you mean that you've been having bloody diarrhea or that you have at some point in the past?

And on your question on whether Crohn's is hereditary or not, the answer is a "maybe." The cause of it is thought to be a combination of having a gene mutation, lifestyle (esp diet and smoking), immune system abnormalities, and microbes. Though really these are all just suspected causes (they just have correlations between them and the disease) and no one really knows if something like the immune system issues cause the disease or are caused by it.

True, I know how "Sir Richard" is feeling for having peptic ulcers ain't nowhere fun ... (and even though I don't understand his and others mentioning their plights with their marriages, my full and sincere respect is for them).

I came close in getting a perforated ulcer: an ulcer that one never wants to get for that can go into peritonitis - which is a very serious infection of the peritoneum that can come from a perforated ulcer, that is horribly life threatening.

You just gotta take care of yourself no matter what it takes.

I think we all know that the answer is that Richard should go to a Doctor, but I'm certainly not one who can lecture to him on that; I'll do almost anything to avoid going myself. I put up with almost a year of having really severe headaches every day rather than go. I think that turned out to be nothing worse than sinus trouble, made worse by my desk at work at the time being very close to a radiator which was so hot that I couldn't touch it, so I had to open the window, so that the top half of me was freezing cold. No such thing as controllable heating, to get just enough heat to some rooms others had to be far too hot.

The reasons that I don't want to go? I don't even want to think about bodies, and what goes on inside them; I prefer to keep it all out of sight and out of mind. I did once go to a post-mortem examination, so I do know what's inside, but I prefer not to think about it. Secondly, I fear what I might be told. If it's something minor it will clear up on its own, and if it's something really serious then I think I'd rather not know. I'll die, and that will fix it. Thirdly, I don't like people touching me; I hate it when a doctor holds my wrist to take a pulse for example. I just cannot bring myself to pick up a living animal, when I needed to pick up a cat recently I had to do it using a towel as a sling so I didn't actually have to touch it, and feel things moving inside it.

The last time I went to a dentist was just before my 21st birthday; I had a very bad experience and swore I'd never go again; that was over 31 years ago. I've taken a couple of teeth out myself since then to avoid having to go back.

So Richard, I'm the last person in the World who has any right to tell you this, but please go to a doctor.

I was married when I was 21 yrs old and divorced 8 months later. I am a quick study. And then never made the same mistake twice. And there's no question it's a male bashing culture we live in. How many times have you heard it? -- Men are dogs! we are told that over and over and then when young guys ACT like it, everyone is surprised when a guy lives up to that expectation. Say it often enough and good chance he'll think that they way he's supposed to be.

And Richard -- when you see blood coming out either end of you, GO SEE A DOCTOR my friend. Really.

I thought I had an ulcer and was taking Prilosec over the counter. It turned out to be a MAJOR Hiatal Hernia and my stomach was totally out of place and starting to twist. Had it twisted much more, I would have died. Only a CAT scan found the problem. My surgeon said it was one of the worst he had ever seen.

Any intestinal situation should really be checked out THOROUGHLY by a physician!

edit: In fact, he said the blood stain happens every night. One would expect, if it were an embolism for him to have died days ago and to cough up blood during the day.

Not necessarily true Chris, I have had it happen to me twice and I'm still here..and Capt. Phil Harris of "Deadliest Catch" had it happen to him and he's still kicking.

PE's are very serious and dangerous but not always deadly..the higher risk is if the clot material lodges in your heart valves...my first clotting incident I was VERY lucky as the clot passed through my heart TWICE without getting stuck. Docs told me that 98% of the people that happens to drop dead instantly. [Eek!]

Depends on your religeous views I guess...

I had a duodinal ulcer whan I was a Junior in High School. The result of too much stress from High School and working two part time jobs at the same time. My symptoms were just extreme pain when ever food moved from my stomach to my small intestine. It was only the size of my small finger tip but took several months to heal. In spite of it I still held the two jobs and graduated from H.S. 6 months early!!

Your best bet with the bloody symptoms you have is to get the Doc immediately!!! Ulcers can also be caused by bacterial infections in the stomach lining... something the didn't know about when I was a Junior in H.S., Keep in touch with us and let us know what they find. Hope you feel better sooner than later!

Take the advice given here Ritchard, this sounds serious.Going by what you have said and I take it you drink the top shelf stuff, if you allready have a ulcer the sprit drinks will burn at the ulcer causing bleeding over a period of time.Sounds like this is what is happeneng and also if you may have a ulcer on your esoghagus which may be doing the same thing and causing bleeding.The only way this can be confirmed if if you go to your GP who will refer you to a speacialist there and then as this sounds urgent, who will investagate further.It may need minor surgery if caught early enough but if left longer treatment may be more intense.This problem you have could be life threating as bleeding may not be able to be controled if left.I dont want too scare you but sometimes shock tactics are needed Ritchard.

I didn't say that no one survives.

But none of this changes the fact that PE's involve coughing blood or bloody sputum rather than simply drool and drool that only occurs at night.

Dental care doesn't just end at the teeth. Bad oral health can lead to life threatening problems.

One of my former co-workers had to have two heart valves replaced as a result of bacterial endocarditis. The guy dipped snuff for many years and his teeth and gums were in very bad shape. Advanced periodontal disease. Bacteria, plaque and tartar on the teeth and gumline is extremely filthy stuff and it can invade the bloodstream. That's what happened to this guy. I find is pretty damned pathetic that it took the doctors so long to diagnose the problem. Some people who get bacterial endocarditis will die in a matter of only a day or two after the infection sets in the heart valves. He had to deal with it for over a month. In the end, he had to endure a chest tube dripping antibiotics straight into his heart for 2 months and then have open heart surgery and then after that have all his teeth pulled and replaced with dentures.

Our company's health insurance policy didn't offer dental in the past. But lots of mounting evidence has shown that good dental care and health will prevent certain far more costly problems. So they added dental coverage for not all that much more money.
