I absolutely agree with Bobby. The type of bacteria involved in tooth decay can absolutely cause endocarditis (inflammation of your heart valves). Not a good thing.

On the other hand, dental procedures can themselves lead to getting that bacteria into the bloodstream, which is why a person who's had a history of infections with related bacteria or endocarditis itself are advised to take antibiotics against those when doing something like a root canal. But the risk from getting this sort of contamination from pulling your own tooth is obviously even more than if you'd let someone who knows what they're doing have a crack at it.

And my mom has a friend who hadn't seen a dentist for a few years then had a bunch of pain and got x-rays showing it was a huge abscess that had been forming for a while and that if she'd waited any longer, the abscess was pretty close to eating through her skull into the brain.

My mother's heart has a prolapsed mitral valve. Because of this condition she has to take big doses of penicillin a couple hours before her teeth cleaning appointment and take more penicillin a few hours afterward. The antibiotics kill off all the bacterias in the intestines that aid in digestion. So it makes you feel a little nauseous, sort of like having a hangover.
