Regardless of the OS on the machine, I usually do not keep the default installation of the system and, at minimum, go through and clean house, throwing out all the crap that's on there. Sometimes I will do a complete wipe and reinstall. Other times, after a good house cleaning, I find it's good to go.
However, I usually do a complete backup, wipe and reinstall of the entire system every one or two years just to be sure everything is all right.
What the hell? You change the oil, antifreeze and transmission fluids on your car every so often. Don't you? You replace the spark plugs, the air filter, the oil filter and the fuel filter. Right? Why should you be any less conscientious with your computer?
