It looks like the Family Drive-In in Stephens City, VA may not be closing for good after all. They said their goodbyes at the end of their 2025 season, which was at the end of November. The Dalke family, which owns the property didn't renew the lease and was to sell the property for its real estate value.

There appears to be a twist in the form of a benefactor that is purchasing the land and intends to keep the Drive-In going.

            Link to the article:

It looks like it's not curtains for the Family Drive-In Theatre near Stephens City after all.

The 10.16-acre property where the iconic Valley Pike venue is located is under contract with a buyer who intends to keep the drive-in open, according to Paige Manuel, associate broker at Winchester-based Oakcrest Commercial Real Estate.

Manuel told The Winchester Star on Wednesday that the prospective buyer is a retired investor from Williamsburg.

"The good news is he plans on hiring a management company and leasing the drive-in and continuing to operate it," said Manuel, who listed the Valley Pike property for sale last June. "It'll be open this spring, just like normal."

This will thrill fans of the outdoor venue, who were saddened when the drive-in's most recent operator, Texas-based Moonstruck East River LLC, announced the drive-in's "forever goodbye" prior to the last showing of the season on Nov. 30. The current property owners, Woodstock-based Dalke's Theatres Inc., are seeking to sell the Valley Pike property and didn't renew its lease with Moonstruck. That lease expired Dec. 31. Moonstruck began operating the drive-in in 2021 following the passing of previous operator Jim Kopp.

While listing the property for sale didn't necessarily mean the end of the Family Drive-In, Manuel said in August that the owner wasn't expressly looking to sell the site to someone interested in keeping it open. The land is zoned General Business District (B2), which has numerous allowable uses in Frederick County, such as gas stations and storage facilities.

William Dalke Jr. first opened the Family Drive-In Theatre in 1956. It's one of only six drive-in movie theaters in Virginia and the closest drive-in to Washington, D.C.

When it looked like the drive-in might close for good, several community members tried to raise money to save it, but their efforts proved unsuccessful.

According to Manuel, the buyer is scheduled to close on the property on Feb. 5, though he noted that real estate closings can potentially be postponed due to paperwork issues. He added that the new owner will entertain proposals from operating companies, one of which could be Moonstruck East River LLC, before executing a lease for the drive-in.

"I think they're probably doing a request for proposal situation, and I think [Moonstruck East River LLC] would certainly be invited to present a proposal," Manuel said.

Just received confirmation that the Look sites in Monrovia and Downey (both CA) closed at the end of business yesterday as well as Redlands, leaving Glendale as their only remaining location in California:

AMC Classic Auburn 14, Auburn, Al closed for good Sunday, February 1, 2026.
Inasmuch as the theatre more often than not outgrossed any of the Montgomery AMCs, this may be a bad sign for the Montgomery theatres.
And I certainly would call the Auburn AMC a "traditional movie theatre" as the attached story does.

What I believe was the final Krikorian location, in Buena Park, CA, closed on February 4. If so, that's the end of the chain.

The opening of the CGV theater nearby in the late teens can't have helped them (even though it shows a lot of Korean movies and not exclusively Hollywood), as it was state of the art, in a better location, and has been kept in beautiful condition ever since. One of the houses has an LG LED screen. I installed some HI/VI/CCAP systems at the Krikorian just before covid, and it seemed pretty run down.

I can finally share this now. Boeing IMAX at Pacific Science Center in Seattle, WA is closed as of Feb 2 due to PacSci selling it and other surrounding spaces. It will reopen in May under a new name with a new owner and operator but still an IMAX. New buyers will determine what that means for their programming.

The only theatre in Yellowknife will close on March 31.

The consensus among the gathering was that the city needs a dedicated screening space. Whether that space would be managed by a non-profit, a cooperative or another group still had to be discussed.

Glad I came to see you when I did! A piece of history changing. :-(

(although not changing that much from the sound of it.)

Can confirm, a wealthy local purchased the land and has worked out a deal for me and another couple of folks to lease the theater on a 10 year term. He wants to keep it around for many generations to come!

I am guessing that you all would say theaters are closing at a higher rate lately. How has this affected the layer of technical support above it all (integrators, distributors, etc.)? It is much different right now than, say, in 2008. I am facing some tough decisions and would love to hear from you guys. You can email me.
