I tried with some small relay which are rated 12V dc and need around 15mA to pull. GPO is not power source, it is just transistor which, when conducting is driving relay, which is powered from 12V external. Power source +12V goes to relay +, than relay - to P on GPO and N of GPO to minus of power source. You also have simple schematic with relay on gpo in manual. Also, reverting cannot help as then current cannot pass, true gpo optpcoupler.
And yes, i have reverse diode in paralel with relay to avoid any back emf.
