Clarification Regarding Flat DCP Availability – Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu

    Hi all,
Has any site received a true Flat DCP for Start wars The Mandalorian & Grogu? We requested a Flat DCP from Disney, but they denied the request and informed us that a Flat version is not available. However, the projectionist/exhibitor letter mentions that both Scope and Flat DCPs are available. Can anyone confirm: whether any site has actually received a Flat composition.

    Thanks.

A feature which is available in 2D, 3D, Flat and Scope. You're doubling the amount of versions which will need to be available around the globe!

Here in Finland, it looks like they have automatically sent localized Flat/Scope versions to each cinema according to the screen information that's been entered in the MPS Exhibitor Portal:
        • If you've told them that your screen is Flat, they've sent you both F and S versions of the DCP.
        • If you've told them that your screen is Scope with adjustable side masking, they've also sent you both F and S versions.
        • If you've told them that your screen is Scope with fixed masking, they've sent you only the S version.
At least that's what I've gathered, based on three local cinemas.

I'll have a look at both versions tomorrow morning and report my findings here!

OK, so here's what I found out:
          • The Flat version is mostly "Scope inside Flat" (1998x836). There's a couple of sequences (eg. starting at 0:39:55 and 1:17:35) where the picture opens up to full Flat (1998x1080).
          • The Scope version seems to be just plain Scope throughout, or at least I couldn't find any aspect ratio changes while skipping.

Is it just me or does this sound like certain theaters are going to screw this up? And then the aspect ratio changes during the Flat presentation...oh boy!

The biggest risk (other than just showing the wrong version), would probably be a venue with adjustable masking showing the flat container but masked to the 2.39 image, perhaps because they were only provided the flat version? Not the end of the world unless they didn't make a digital crop too, if they didn't there will be a big surprise moment waiting at those to timecodes.

I'll never forget playing One Hour Photo when it was first released. The heads and tails on all of the reels said "scope", lab printed and everything.

Okey dokey. I set up the movie with the scope trailers and everything, started the first show and the trailers went through fine and the movie started.

                Short, fat people.

Immediately followed by me making sudden lens change.

That's the only time I've seen a print factory-labelled with the wrong information like that. Not just written on a piece of masking tape, but actually printed on the film.

After that I always put the film on a light box after that to verify that it was what it said it was but I never had another one that lied to me.
