Yeah, it would make sense if you license it directly from Microsoft, they probably want money for that. On the other hand, like you indicated, all relevant patents, should be gone by now and there are open-source rewrites that, frankly, work fine nowadays. I guess it's also a bit of the typical Apple arrogance... You may need READ capability to go from Microsoft to Apple, but thou shall never return the other way...

It doesn't matter which partition it is.
The SR1000 server has very poor USB compatibility.

        For those interested...

Not common yet but a more robust version of NTFS for linux is coming.
From kernel 7.1 , ubuntu 26.04 still only has 7.0 so not common yet in LTS type installs.
        however..
By default, Ubuntu 26.04 mounts NTFS volumes using the ntfs3 kernel driver. Originally contributed by Paragon Software, this driver runs directly in kernel space
        ---
The recent upgrade to the Linux NTFS file system driver is a monumental ground-up rewrite known as the "NTFS Resurrection," officially merged into the Linux 7.1 kernel mainline. Developed by Namjae Jeon (the engineer behind Linux’s robust exFAT driver) under the initial name NTFSPlus, this implementation replaces the ancient, read-only kernel driver with a fully integrated, modern, high-performance solution.
