Many years ago, when I was operating the Diamond State Drive-In Theatre in Felton, Delaware, I was approached with an inquiry regarding a private screening. At the time, the title wasn't discussed, and as with many earlier inquiries on the subject, little confidence was placed in the prospect for any follow-up. As the early months of that long ago season progressed, however, it was evident that this request would prove to be the exception.
When legitimate interest was confirmed, what coalesced from the initial e-mail proved to be one of the more memorable experiences from the nearly three decades that I've spent in the exhibition industry.
The lady who contacted me had never visited the Diamond State Drive-In, but she indicated that she hoped to schedule a private screening of Cinema Paradiso for her boyfriend's fortieth birthday. He was a doctoral candidate in film studies at Temple University. There were just two people expected to be in attendance!
When the scheduled date arrived in mid-June, on an almost idyllic evening along the Mid Atlantic coast , I helped the couple navigate to the drive-in by cell phone. When they arrived, I turned off the marquee to discourage any uninvited guests. After parking, the young lady disembarked from her vehicle, set up a picnic blanket on the ground, surrounded it with candles, and then led her blindfolded boyfriend from their vehicle. She took off his blinder; the concessionaire brought them popcorn and soda, and I started Cinema Paradiso on a pair of old Peerless Magnarc lamps and two Motiograph heads.
All these years later, the Diamond State Drive-In is long gone, but the memories of that distant evening still linger most fondly: the perfect postscript for any Cinema Paradiso story!
