Yeah it WAS nice since it was also booked at the American Cinematech's Egyptian Theatre Friday to play along with TERMINATOR 2. Unfortunately, the Washington Theatre got to show the 70mm print while the Egyptian showed it off the Blu-Ray at the last minute (they still showed T-2 in 70mm, though).

Honestly, I didn't think it was a great example of 70mm. The low-tech graphics took away from the 70mm ness of it all. Plus, I was not too impressed with the print quality in terms of overall steadiness and R1 was a bit soft for my 70mm liking. Most reels were fine but the end credits had some sort of extra motion going on. It is an SR magnetic print. The sound certainly was crisp and the mix was decent and made good use of directional cues.

The print condition was actually rather decent...I think I saw one jump cut with little or no dialog missing. The reel ends were clearly the most "enjoyed" and the print had been plattered and cued for the blind.

I've heard this comment many times, and I am curious to learn more. My involvement with CDS was peripheral, as described in this thread.

I never ran a CDS booth. I did see (and hear) CDS running in the ORC labs, in the Eastman Kodak Hollywood screening room, and in various theaters running various features. In each case, the system worked. The sound was excellent with no audible glitches. Ever. Even on a test loop running at ORC which I intentionally damaged to get it to glitch. The system had heroic levels of error detection, correction, and concealment.

So why the bad rep? I’ve heard lots of anecdotes, but I’m curious to hear from people who actually ran CDS, people with first-hand experience. Did you lose shows? Were there problem prints? Unreliable hardware?

Yet another update for Scott's list: the Entertainment Technology Center theatre location (Los Angeles, CA) was closed down shortly after the DCI spec was released. The Kinoton was removed at that time.

Getting back to the Nashville/digital sound thing...

In all the articles and documentation I’ve seen, Nashville has never been mentioned as having any Cinema Digital Sound installations circa 1990-92. Ditto for Dolby Digital during 1992 and early 1993. Therefore, I think all this discussion of digital sound presentations in Nashville is nothing more than a simple case of faulty memory. Nashville’s first taste of digital sound was probably with DTS and Jurassic Park beginning in June 1993.

And since we're discussing early digital sound at the movies, I guess now would be an ideal time to cite the theaters that did run CDS. So…what follows is a list of the known Cinema Digital Sound presentations in the United States. This was prepared for an article I had intended to publish last year for the 20th anniversary of digital sound in movie theaters. Note that the data represents the starting point of each engagement. In some cases, the CDS prints at a point in their run were withdrawn and replaced with Dolby prints.

I am too young to have actually used it but in this thread the issue of hardware failure is brought up a few times although it's a long read to find where the specific incidents are mentioned.

Manny... It's unlikely you attended a CDS presentation of Flatliners in Miami for several reasons, the chief one being that the earliest CDS showings of Flatliners weren't until autumn 1990 in Europe, by which time the American release had come and gone. Plus, when Flatliners was initially released in the U.S., in August 1990, CDS at that time was strictly a 70mm format and I don't believe the Omni was even capable of screening 70mm prints. As well, when the UA Movies at the Falls installed CDS in summer 1991, for Terminator 2, it was promoted as the arrival of digital sound in Miami. Convinced?

Michael,

As you might know, no Hawaii theatres were equipped with CDS digital sound because it was a new process and it's future uncertain.. As you know, it was a wise decision because the process was discontinued and replaced with three other digital sond processes, DTS, SRD and SDDS.

Despite the lack of CDS sound playback, a 70mm print of TERMINATOR 2 played at the Waikiki #3 and I saw it with my friend on opening nigh for free because she was a executive (Vice President-Theatre Operations) at Pacific's Consolidated Theatres. Although the print was not Dolby, it sounded awsome at the Waikiki.
