You are absolutely right about that, Gordon! The problem here is that films are produced for tens and hundreds of millions of dollars and then at the end the distributors save money on the release prints. Here in Europe print quality (or the lack of) is a major problem. From your comment I gather the same applies to the US. How can we ensure the best possible presentaton if we get third-rate prints? As I said, this applies not only to the SDDS track, but to image quality and also to other formats. For instance, we have a printing lab in Italy which just doesn`t seem to be able to get the density of the Dolby Digital data blocks right. Where I worked before we often got new prints which performed at an error rate of 6-7 or didn`t work at all. (Yes, the Dolby cameras were clean and well-aligned, other prints peformed around 2-3.) It all comes down to one thing: Distributors don`t see us cinemas as the prime medium for movie exhibition anymore, we just play the films a little earlier. Why are there so many people saying "I wait until the video is out"? Because the standard of movie exhibition has stagnated or even fallen so much that there is no real incendiary anymore that you HAVE to see it in a movier theater. And that is also in part the fault of the cinemas themselves. We shouldn`t simply give up and say "I don`t care why it doesn`t work" or "This or that should better go away" because then, in the end, we cinemas will all go away!
