Brad,
I used to be very pro SRD but have since changed my feelings towards it. In this area about two years ago we had a spell of prints with bad SRD tracks and it caused alot of headaches for theatre owners. DTS certainly has had its share of problems too, but not in this area for a long time.....mainly power supply issues.

In the past, before I worked in this area, certain Dolby personel had been somewhat rude to one of our best customers when at Showest......needless to say he has primarily DTS/USL in his chain. If Dolby came crawling to him I still doubt that he would ever purchase any new Dolby gear again.

Our most recent booth install has 6 DTS's, 2 DA-20, and all Panastereo analog processors.....at our customres request. Sony is a dead issue with me, and with many or our customers.

Make no mistake Mark, I'm not bashing the dts format. Almost all of the problems locally stemmed from discs that were damaged in shipment. However like you, if there is a problem, it tends to kill any possibility of using the format in the future. Now that dts is introducing the hard drive based system, I feel it will be a possibility with the customers again.

I have only had one dts power supply ever die on me, and that was on the first batch of dts6-d units that were shipped many years ago, so it looks like I've been luckier than you in that regard. In the SRD world, dropout issues are just not a problem.

Secretary called me just yesterday morning to say there was a fax from DTS announcing the trade-in offer.

I don't recall exactly but I think she said they were offering around US$550 for a DTS-6. The trade-in would work for the DTS-6D units and the value was higher for those.

I won't see the fax until tomorrow.

You get $525 back from dts if you prove that the unit has been made inoperable (by sending in 2 of the boards).
I understand the XD10 will be around $5900. I think if you are willing to invest that much, you could just as well keep the dts-6 and try to keep it alive rather than trade it in. Then you have both.
I don`t see how the XD10 will reduce problems with damage caused in shipment. If the discs are damaged, then it will be difficult to copy them to the hard drive, too. But it will reduce handling damage obviously. On the other hand, is it possible to transfer files directly from one unit to the other to follow the print? I do not know if the files can be copied from the hard drive to an external computer to burn a backup in case the original gets lost or damaged - probably not.

Manny, you have a secretary? Wow.

I am curious as to how man people will actually turn the units in. And for those who do will DTS save the boards that are still good out of the units in order to provide them for people who still use the two disc units.

Okay...First of all, I would just like to say that I have no idea why that post got duplicated like that.

I don't have a secretary of my own. I was referring to the theatre owner's secretary. As it happens, she does a lot of work for me, though.

We're actually phasing out DTS here so we won't be trading in on that program. We'll most likely trade all of our DTS units towards the purchase of one CP-650 system.

Brad,
I have not seen any SRD droupouts since that episode a couple of years ago, but it left a bad taste in some theatre owners moutns and I had just installed several systems. SRD is also iffy in 2nd run houses if there is alot of print wear. Error rates are higher and the system can revert more often. DTS tracking is generally not affected by print wear. But all seems to be fine with SRD for the momoent, and if one used the BACP SRD reader he has an even better chance of obtaining even lower error rates. Another reason for installing so much DTS is its cost....which is around 2K lower than Dolby as one doesn't have to buy a basement reader or the penthouse. This means that DTS digital is more affordable and is finding its way into loads of mom and pop theatres.

P.S. Also, there is not a combination of processors out there made today that come close to the sound quality of a DTS running through a Panastereo CSP-1200!!

Brad--let me guess...you use the penthouse readers, right?

Dropouts definitely _are_ a problem with the Simplex and Cinemeccanica basement readers that I've used. The cat. 700 (and presumably the 701 and the BACP) works great, however.

Scott,
Actually basement readers have improved to the point that they ar about as good as the CAT 701 is. Forget Christie and Shakahmecanica though. If you get a 5 star that will not work with a basement reader just install a new spring on the damping roller, the old springs were too stiff and induced too much jitter, however the new ones work just fine... Early basement readers were a disaster. I installed a couple of C.E. basement readers about a year ago and they gave constant 2's and 3's(this was a 2nd run location too!) and thats about the same I normally see on a CAT 701's around here. Going to either the BACP or the CAT 702 should give a tad bit lower reading...sometimes a whole digit lower. Note that the CAT 702 uses the same circuitry as is in the BACP reader....yes, the two companies did some trading of ideas and liscensing there.....
