England Registered: Jul 99 posted 08-30-2006 04:18 PM                     "Independence Day" - I recall and read that the 70mm print was shipped with adapted DTS Reader head, so we should assume that it is still with this print?. It includes West Side Story. But clearly that's not the case at all from what you're saying. So is it possible that the cinema I heard this from had the same problem you refer to, i.e. an issue with the timecode reader itself? I've never seen West Side Story though I've heard the songs and the praise, but I'll be willing to see it there in 70mm! I happen to live around your area in D.C., and I drove to Maryland once to see The Arcade Fire play at the MPP. It's a pretty long drive, maybe because of the traffic, but I remember the drive down to my house was shorter than the drive up to the venue. I might check Google Maps. Take your favorite route to the Beltway and then take the innerloop to Colesville Road. Go South on that for about a mile or so and the theatre will be on your left. There is ample parking in parking garages (free after 8:00pm and on weekends) around the theatre. We ran it at our venue in Santa Monica, CA, in the middle of this month. It's in reasonable shape, except for the first 4 or 5 minutes or so (the "overture" -- the part with the various colors behind an abstract rendition of lower Manhattan), which has a rather nasty set of perf abrasions along the right side of the screen. Fortunately, that scratch goes away just before the actual storyline of the movie begins. (We didn't do this, we received it this way). Print is not exactly new now, it's the same print Sony/Columbia made back in about 2005, so there is some wear and tear. The good news is, however that all that was required to upgrade the audio of the print was ... use the new discs! Any venue, of course, has to be "5-across" capable to get the proper sound, which AFI/Silver is. (If someone books the print and is not 5-across capable, there is a set of "normal 5.1" discs with the print as well.) The following is a link to a PDF file from Chace Audio, which performed the hands-on part of the audio restoration. The amazing thing is, prints had not been sounded with this full "original" sound mix since some time around 1981, even the 1 or 2 prints made in the early 90s! So, if you have a good memory for sound and/or music, hearing this one is a revelation. It's a classic sound mix, by legendary sound mixer Murray Spivak, and the movie won the Oscar for best sound for that year (1961). Print itself was in pristine condition (that was to be expected; this print only got handled by the projectionists of the museum itself and they definitely know what they are doing)but the image quality did not look 70mm to me. It was shown as a surprise, I was late for the meeting so I missed the introduction speech when I entered the theatre, by then the ouverture was on the screen. Watching it, not knowing it was 70mm, I thought I was looking at some 35mm digitally restored print. Only after the first half I heard from someone we were looking at 70mm. That would have never occurred to me; it did not have the WOW factor the Todd AO 50th anniversary screenings had to me in the Schauburg in Karlsruhe some years ago.  |  IP: Logged
