Simple question Steve, I never mentioned MUT just for him to make the parts himself. Was what I said irrelevant or useless.
Since I've fallen into doing this before I'll point out what might seem "not so obvious" to you:
While your suggestion was a good one, it wasn't what he was asking for. He specifically asked if anyone knew of an off-the-shelf product: not a suggestion of having one made.

And Steve was complaining about people more or less giving "I don't know" advice. In a way, you were doing that. Your advice was more or less saying "I don't know but I do know someone can make one with the right tools."

I'm sure everyone here's done the same at some point.

Simple answer: I specifically targeted those that were responding with MUT-related answers as to be providing irrelevent information for this topic (though it might be accurate for other topics). As to your information...you refer to something that "is simple to make"...if you were referring to a sleeve type adapter, then you were providing information based on not understanding the problem. While an entire spindle assembly isn't particularly hard for a machine shop (until you get to the latch part...which isn't too hard to make either but "some assembly will be required" once you obtain all of the needed parts...it also doesn't address the need to have both spindles.

Let me return the question...just what were you suggesting that would provide a reel arm such that BOTH 5/16 and 1/2" spindles are provided AND they drive their respective reels? Very few reel arms use a finger hole drive (SPECO comes to mind...and that is NOT what Frank has) and that is the only type of reel drive that can use a sleeve type adapter to solve the problem.

Michael I don't want to discourage you or anyone else from posting good information but I am trying to discourage you or anyone else from NOT reading the question and then just blurting out anything for the sake of providing information. It not only doesn't answer the question but clouds the question and answers by making one sift through worthless information (FOR THE TOPIC, not ALL topics).

I'm not even talking about how topics can drift off-topic...what thread doesn't do that? I'm talking about simply nothing to do with what was asked. Most off-topic theads start on topic and the discussion wanders off-topic....kinda like this response.

Steve

I guess you are both right I will stay out of topics like this.

However after looking at the manuals for the 7000 and 8000 series if someone can't turn those spindles to the right diameter from stock and make them work then they can’t run a lathe. It's “Simple Simon”, find some stock and turn it down to the right diameter, and the latch is joke; come on Steve what is there to understand?
I also feel that my advice gave him an alternative to an "off the shelf" part as well Chris.

But I will be certain to not bother anyone with this kind of advice again.

Michael,

First off...the request was for:

quote: Frank Angel
To that end, is there an off-the-shelf shaft adaptor
It wasn't a request for an alternative.

Next, I think I stated that it isn't a trick for shop to turn the shafts but you still have not addressed the method of turning the locamotion to the reel. For 5/16" that is by key and for 1/2" it is by drive pin...which precludes merely altering the shaft.

Next your method of merely swapping out the whole shaft now has the operator having to disassemble the spindles (remove the clutch, release the roll pin, pull the shaft, replace the shaft, intstall the roll pin, clutch and recalibrate. Note, it will be even more sucky for the lower where a take up belt is working against you. BTW...Kelmar does have these shafts available, off the shelf...so no need to reinvent the wheel (or shaft in this case).

quote: Michael Moore
come on Steve what is there to understand?
And there it is...you don't understand what is being asked for. What Frank wants is an easy way to switch between 5/16" and 1/2" spindles to accommodate the different reels. He has also indicated (not on the first post but later on) that he doesn't want it to be a project to make the switch back and forth...something simple.

It is one thing to remove or loosen three screws and change the spindle, it is another to disassemble the shaft assembly and retension or align the whole thing. That is what needs to be understood.

My beef is with not answering the question...not with the information stated...in the right situation, it would be useful. In this case, it just confuses the issue because it doesn't answer the question at all.

Course, I have to apologize as well with shooting my info in since I'm one of those who can't read too well and only read what I wanted to read.

I saw the word "Kelmar" and my mind immediately shot to the rewind table - not to those arms on a projector - after I reread Frank's request of an adapter.

My apologies to Frank and others on this one. Please teach me to read better in the future.

Oh might Steve!
I bow my head in reverence and praise the all mighty, all knowing Steve; for he chastises us all and tells us how we are all dumb. Oh great and wonderful Steve how I am so ashamed of my inability to understand, please forgive me! I am so sorry frank for not understanding your needs and question; hence relaying such awful, wrong, uninformative, and distracting solutions to your problem. My feeble mind can not grasp these questions… I shall never post again, We must all never post again for the all powerful knowing Steve will answer all, for he is the end of the Universe the Alpha and Omega, the all inquisitive, I beg for your forgiveness, all knowing and powerful God Guttag!!!

Seems like a properly reverent reply. I can't agree that nobody but Steve should post answers, though. And expecting us to exactly understand the question and post only exactly appropriate replies is asking too much.
However, usually someone who read and understood the question says the answer was wrong - and hopefully why. Then we should re-read the original post and think for a while about whether we or the other person was right before cranking off a new post telling the other guy what a jerk he is. That usually just identifies us as closed minded egocentric idiots.
There's no easy fix for the reel arm spindle. Some projectors, generally 35/70mm ones - have easily removable spindles with all the various drive sizes and keying arrangements available. I don't know of a non-OEM reel arm with this feature but there may be some. Kelmar may be able to make arms with rewind-style spindles that use the snap-in adapters.
You can get 6,000 foot reels with 5/16 shafts. Sooner or later the reel will fall off; full 6,000 foot reels are just too much weight for the shaft size, so it breaks at the flange due to work hardening.

Hi, Frank; Would something like this work for a cheap fix?

I felt I needed to praise the God Guttag.

However I remember back when I asked a question about what projector was worth getting, the Simplex Apogee, or the Century MSC.
The first few posts addressed the question I asked, then out of the blue the topic was changed to Kinoton’s rule and everything sucks, and what is everyone’s favorite projector and people were all over the place. And Steve was in the thick of it. I never once complained about keeping on track or posting correct info or just not replying if you did not know. People stared posting about all kinds of stuff till Brad asked the final question to bring it all back on track, “I just want to know what projector he is going to go with?”
I respect Steve I think he is very knowledgeable about all of this stuff, I like his advice. I however like to make things, and I see opportunities like this one to kind of invent a way around the issue and make my own stuff that’s all, it is advice in a different way, that’s all.

OK, I admit my guilt here with regard to the "MUT" related solution. I didn't see this thread until it was a few posts in, and I misread the original question. I was thinking he WAS asking about a MUT spindle adaptor. I didn't even realize how I'd gone off the track until reviewing the thread just now.

Apologies for the inconvenience to all concerned.

The funny thing about that is the Cinemark in Park City thats also used for Sundance. They installed Kinotons as a courtesy to the festival... or did they say they were talked into it? Anyway they say its the biggest mistake they ever made. Those at Cinemark obviously feel different than Steve but I agree with Steve's asessment of the Kinotons for the most part.

Actually Michael Steve's a great guy whom I greatly respect and admire. However I think if we sent Steve some of the so called kid projectionists from this area to operate Steve's booths... he'd be in for a big shock!! His gear wouldn't hold up worth a hoot. Indeed, he's living and working in his own little world.

Also most here run to cover their butts (expectedly so I guess) when something expensive they've spec'd in and sold is criticized and I always get a laugh out of that.

Mark

Yea, those kids would take his 20 plus year old CIRO splicer which has prob worked like a champ all these years, and in one week from working with it - have the blades bent and the phenolic handle busted off from it being slung off the platter deck due to fixing one of their out-of-frame splices that they created.

No Monte,

I wasn't just referring to the splicers.... everything.
