I know this is a bit late; I must have missed your post, and I've only just seen it.
As far as I remember, the VW advert seems to show two projectors, with part of the second one just visible on the far left of the picture. When I visited the Rio some years ago I'm pretty sure they only had one machine; have they added a second one since? It also looked like they had a digital player in the box, one of the ones as used by Arts Alliance in the original DSN installations, I can't remember the name now.
The periscope arrangement with the moving mirror to divert the light through the 16mm side was clearly visible in the advert, and I do remember seeing this at the Rio. When I was projecting at the clocktower they had a file with various product leaflets in it, including one from Kionton for these double-sided projectors, which also showed this arrangement, but I've also seen them elsewhere, Barbican cinema I think, with separare lamphouses for each side.
