*cough* Gord, what are the odds of sending that laser...
Actually I brought up the laser..and no chance, as I don't own one. The guy I used to do contract work for has one.

They were incredibly expensive when new and are very hard to find used..I've been looking for one for quite a while.

Ooops, sorry Tony, I didn't phrase that well. We were trying to get our hands on a laser the last time we saw Gord... I'm just trying to bug him [Smile]

However it looks like a laser might be very helpful for getting everything in check. It is looking like some unwanted light is getting into the optics

Also Tony, do you know for sure if your curved gate would fit into an old black x-l, and do you have any aperture plates available?

Thanks for all your help

I was wondering if the size of the spacer between the prime and the anamorphic has an impact oh how the light is scattering? Is there a method to determine what the size of the spacer should be?

Also, how does this lens shield work? I've never seen/heard of them before this. Where would you get one, or how could I mimic one to see if i need one? (blocking the light with your finger does seem to help remove the blur)

A curved gate will make no difference in this instance
the curved gate will effect focus more so with short focus lens than with the longer focal lengths involved
Look at the Super or E7 they produced excellent focus

We're going to try out a curved gate.... even if it doesn't work for clearing up this problem it should help improve pictures in other ways. (Perhaps a cleaner sharper blur?)

Boy! Did they ever, along with rock steady images! Almost kind of sad to have old machinery like this outdo the newer lines of projectors.

Sorry about the delay on updating our focus conundrum.

We now have an incredibly clear and sharp blur!!
The curved gate that Tony helped us acquire is a wonderful piece of curved goodness! (Thanks Tony, I like the magnet you sent too)
You can see film grain from the booth across the entire screen.
The light blur is still there, but is not nearly as dominating as it was before. You can see the picture is very sharp within the blur of white light. On darker images you can't even really see it.

Just a curious question, has anyone ever seen light blurring like what we're experiencing occur because of a defective bulb?

I guess what we really need now is a laser alignment kit... does anyone know where we could locate one?

Thanks everyone for your help on this issue so far.

Hah, I have to laugh at the words Simplex and Laser alignment in the same sentence. I watched this done in the factory on a Mega that was getting ready to ship overseas for me to install, and the Laser was so far off, (loose in the Collar, and unnoticed). HeHe, Sorry, just Laughing

When I worked for them (Strong), my cost was about 800 bucks, wasn't worth it, but I thought it would look cool in my tool bag!

Richard... can we assume the guy that was attempting to align your Megathingy had just assembled a Chicken Fryer and had gotten confused...

Try to find an Align-O-Tron. Greg Mueller used to make them but he moved away and has pretty much disappeared. Do a google for Mueller Atomics....

I had a bad moment when I saw that first sentence....

Glad to hear the gate made an improvement, and I take it the alignment was no problem.

Yes, it still sounds like a lamphouse alignment issue or you need those light shields. I'll try to get a picture of the shields to post here soon. The Simplex XL parts manual here on the site shows the light shield..page 42, part # P-2869

Look through that parts catalog and make sure you also have ALL of the shields for your dowser and sight box cover door..if any of those are missing that could also be a source of light leaks...

Also, any chance you can get a screen shot (use a trailer so the MPAA piracy police don't get their panties in a wad) so we can see what the blur looks like? It may give more insight into the problem...

I could really get some digs in re your comments about Simplex sir, but I will only say that laser aligning a lamphouse at the factory then shipping it is a waste of time. The bounces and jolts of shipping, especially to an overseas destination will throw the alignment off big time.

Laser alignment is only effective when the equipment is installed in it's final location.

I do agree with you though, that a loose collar and the tech not noticing is good for a laugh...and sadly typical of Strong's modus operandi lately...

Sorry to be a nudge, but are you SURE it's not the port glass? Did you give it a good cleaning? Check for scratches or mars of any kind?

If you're getting this aberration with any lens, I'm less inclined to believe it's your optics, and rather something in the line of throw. Make sure there's absolutely nothing but the glass in between your lens and screen, and if you can remove the port glass, try running something without it in place.
