Sam isn't exaggerating the low take up. We had a couple episodes of a tv show they wanted to watch there and we decided not to risk it since the film is to the edge of the reel. His assistant mentioned they though possibly of cutting into the floor and other options but that was the most feasible one. The booth is really nice and clean, and the guys working there seem to know how to handle film.  |  IP: Logged Brad Miller Administrator Posts: 17775 From: Plano, TX (36.2 miles NW of Rockwall) Registered: May 99 posted 06-18-2015 04:42 PM                     It's really not a huge deal to put the takeup reel parallel to the port window wall (under the viewing window, not the projection window) and have the film exit the projector to a roller on the port window wall just above the floor, then the film would travel upward for 2 feet (as the film twists 90 degrees) to a roller that feeds it square onto the reel. An external takeup motor for this can be tied into the failsafe so when the failsafe drops, the takeup motor stops. It's really simple. The only drawback would be the need to have about 4 extra feet of leader to be able to "reach" the reel, but the beauty of this scenario is that normal 2000 foot reels could still be taken up below the projector as normal, and only larger (or 70mm) reels would utilize the wall-mounted takeup spindle. Then again if they are running with just barely enough leader to reach the takeup reel as it is now, those leaders aren't long enough to protect the print anyway and should be extended.  |  IP: Logged Sam D. There's a periscope device blocking a lot of space and in fact the changeovers are made through it. Posts: 12814 From: Annapolis, MD Registered: Dec 1999 posted 08-13-2015 05:23 AM                     It looks to me that the wide aspect ratio really gave them a hard time on close ups...the frames looked very cropped because they tried to do close ups but didn't have anything to fill the frame so either have extraneous stuff or just see someone's eyes. The super-wide-screen stuff never did well with close ups...they were good for panoramic images. Heck, some have problems with it on just normal Cinemascope frames, let alone Ultra-Panavision. So I wonder if the movie will be released in Digital as an S-276 and if so, will exhibitors just use their "Scope" format or will want the image zoomed to get rid of those pesky black bars and crop the piss out of the sides. And those 2:1 screen people out there will be pissed to see letterbox bars show up on even those screens! So I see www.in70mm.com is having fun with the promotion of The Hateful Eight...: quote: 50 theatres across in the US - in 70mm exclusively. I hope the New Mission Theatre in SF will run It in 70mm as the first movie to be shown at this long closed remodeled theatre do to open at the end of this year, or will It be the old Castro Theatre, they have 70mm but don't show first run movies. To bad the large screen Todd-AO cinema in SF the UA'Coronet'is long closed. To think now some large cinemas that pulled out their 70mm projectors are putting them back in! Last I heard they were still looking for a pair. Floor will not support the weight of AA Norelcos. They are looking for Century of Simplex 70/35 projectors. They were not interested in a pair of DP-75s. I would expect if they get open in time they will play it. They've been posting them on ebay. If so I would never recommend them. The pair of JJs they sold the Grand Lake back in 79 were a mess. Their rebuild was a coat of new paint. The intermittents were unusable. Had to be rebuilt. Those JJs are no longer at the Grand Lake. Have not gotten confirmation on Haightful Eight yet but I expect that the Grand Lake will play it. A couple of different engineers have been by to take measurements. Also be aware that Steve Newton in Atlanta is in some kind of relationship with IC--i.e. they list stuff under the same banner on ebay despite the Atlanta or Miami locations which tip off who's selling the stuff. I personally have no problems with either Krams or Newton, and Newton's pleasant to speak with on the phone and generally helpful. Ditto for Dara Raush in the Miami office.  |  IP: Logged Sam D.
