Beyond theory, however, reality brings disappointments.
I was very disappointed with the intermediate quality of the 70mm 5 perf prints of "Interstellar", "Hateful 8" and "Dunkirk". Years ago, the most important lab experts were dismissed.
Mr. Nolan and Mr. Hoytema would have to try a different way of working with regard to the processing of "2001" in terms of taste and technique.
It's certainly a mistake to announce in advance that you can restore the high-quality impression of premiere prints. With regard to the sharpness of detail and the image status after two stages of the intermediate process, this may never have been successful anywhere in the world.
If the shrinkage index demands modified Bell & Howell printers, it would still be possible today to draw acceptable positives from older negatives. However, if the original negative from "2001" shows some fading phenomena today, only the path of digital restoration remains as it did most recently with "My Fair Lady" and "Spartacus". For a very small amount of prints, perhaps the direct printing of the mechanically repaired original negative would still be feasible, which could achieve a better sharpness, but it is questionable whether one could restitute the shadows and gray values again neutrally without color crossings. But since this film was announced as "unrestored", I hoped for a direct print in Cannes! But after the UHD Revivals of Nolan Films (looked better in the old Blu rays before), I doubt, that they are able to restitute standard qualities of 70mm prints from the 60s.

The directional original mix was only to be heard on the contemporary, but now color faded first run prints or on a letterbox DVD Edition from the 1990s still understandable. The brand new version of 2018 promises to bring back the original sound mix.
I don't think this is correct - the original six-track mix has always been available via DTS Special Venue discs.
quote: Mark Ogden
The original 35-millimeter six-channel soundtrack had decayed beyond repair, so Mr. Nolan sourced audio from a 35-millimeter preservation element made in the 1980s
I'm not entirely sure this is a wise decision. Is he planning to somehow digitally replicate the sound of the original magnetic tracks? The bonus of the DTS sound was that the tape hiss audible in the several completely silent space scenes was eliminated.

Thank you for the information. I had heard of a (released) DTS special venue disc, but I didn't performed screenings specifically with this DTS.
A report: https://wexarts.org/blog/2001-70mm-w-dts-hal-lives
Regarding the home cinema media, I know only the letterbox DVD with rudimentary directional sound. There's the scene with the receiving stewardess on Space Station 5, who Heywood Floyd with "Good Morning, sir!" welcomed, 0.25.44 The voice moves from the Left channel to the center channel. A few shots of this (otherwise qualitatively fluctuating and awful) DVD are reminiscent of a neutral light determination similar to the 70mm premiere prints, as it is hardly to be found in later media and film prints.
Not quite understandable is the release of this new trailer: Is this look in all seriousness on UHD or even to expect 70mm? I have not seen anything so sad of this movie yet. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oR_e9y-bka0

For last year‘s Oslo 70mm festival we tested the different DTS discs for 2001 prior to the show. A Classic 6 Track (5.1.0), an 8 Channel version (5.2.1) and I think there is also a „‚modern“ 5.1 (3.2.1) soundtrack available. I don‘t recall all details but afair we had to change some channel routing in the Yamaha DME64 because the channel assignment wasn‘t compatible with the preset that was created. But yes, classic mix is definitely available for 2001.

Presumably, the article was referring to a 6-track mag fullcoat printmaster, not a 35mm release print. And, as far as I know, this is not a rarely used format, but rather a standard archive format for movie soundtracks.

The "6-channel" format of 2001 on DTS is standard "Special Venue" assignments:

L, LC, C, RC,R, S

That is, where Ls and Rs normally are, is Left-Center and Right-Center and where subwoofer normally is, Surround (Mono) is. That is VERY typical for 70mm (Classic titles) in DTS. Note, LC/RC can be called IL and IR (Intermediate Left, Intermediate Right) as well.

Part of the DTS format was for any non 5.1 versions to print, on the disc label itself the channel assignment.

You are correct that there are three 2001 DTS track types, 5.1, 6-channel and 8-channel.

Yes, that's what I presumed too. But why go back to the magnetic tracks when they've already been digitized? Maybe he's planning on improving them somehow.

Yes, there you have it... digitized, you see...

Nolan doesn't like digital, but he's also a realist, he knows nobody but Tarantino has any working equipment left to play mag tracks so the soundtrack will be pressed on vinyl. So, the only thing you need is three turn tables in perfect synchronization to recreate the "original", 6-track analog experience. You're advised to hire a professional DJ to take care of the turntable business though.

I still don't see it mentioned anything about keeping the original 6-channel mix available. He only mentions the 5.1

6-track mix from 1968: https://www.festival-cannes.com/en/festival/actualites/articles/2001-a-space-odyssey-the-backstage-techno logy-of-a-return-to-the-big-screen

"The 70mm print is being exhibited with the original 6-channel 1968 soundtrack. There are 5-speakers behind the screen and a mono surround channel. The original stereo sound design and imagery is unaltered, no digital filtering or fixes have been made to the soundtrack. The 6-channel sound will play from DTS disc."

This is good news, for sure. I do have access to the DTS 6-channel files for this title but if they changed the serial number, it would throw a new wrinkle into it. However, it looks as if they are trying to preserve the orignal experience as best as possible.

I hope that it wasn't de-hissed in the way that the Lawrence of Arabia DTS mix has been de-hissed (leaving essentially zero "room tone" or background noise in the track).

Chace not only removed the entire upper end of the audio, they re-cut music.

Edwards Greenway Grand Palace in Houston added from 6/15-6/21. I will be running a test sometime this week. Details still coming in as it was very last minute addition. Same screen used for Hateful 8 and Dunkirk.
