Author Topic: 70mm 50th Anniversary 2001 A Space Odyssey Terry Monohan Master Film Handler Posts: 379 From: San Francisco CA USA Registered: May 2014 posted 06-11-2018 10:29 AM                     Being the original Super Cinerama 70mm large curved screen opening of 2001 was shown on deep curved Cinerama screens in 70mm did the original Super 70 Cinerama print have any built in adjustments made like some of the early TODD-AO 70mm prints for curved screens or was the adjustment for Cinerama screens made in the lens? Now with the new 70mm 2001 release showing mainly on flat screens does the image look different or distorted? I wonder If any 70mm flat screen theatres have put in a curve frame for this new 2001 showing to make It look like It did with the original Cinerama release date,probably not. Posts: 12814 From: Annapolis, MD Registered: Dec 1999 posted 06-11-2018 12:50 PM                     I am unaware of any 2001 prints that were EVER made to look un-distorted on a Cinerama screen. And, before you jump in on that it was released in Cinerama theatres, yes I know. In fact, I projected for 18-years at the Uptown in DC (the premier theatre for 2001) and ran that title numerous times, including the 25th anniversary on that very screen. It was always a normal Super Panavision 70 print and yes it did distort. We did have deep curve correct lenses for 70mm but they were spherical in nature so while the horizon lines were relatively flat, the sides would pincushion so when one is in the corner of the image, their heads and such would elongate. In particular, on the space station when Dr. Floyd was talking with the Russians, those on the edge of the screen would be distorted but those in the middle looked relatively normal.  |  IP: Logged Stephan Shelley Jedi Master Film Handler Posts: 854 From: castro valley, CA, usa Registered: Nov 2014 posted 06-11-2018 11:44 PM                     Happened to be doing some work on the digital projector at the Castro while they were running 2001 70mm and they sent two DTS soundtrack version. 5.1 and 6 track with the Le & Re on the normal Ls & Rs tracks.  |  IP: Logged Scott Norwood Film God Posts: 8146 From: Boston, MA. Print looked great with no scratch lines. Nice bright 70mm scope picture. As usual when they run a DTS disk at the Castro I never hear any surround sound out of their lame shoe box second hand surround tiny speakers. I know It had mono surround information While I must say the 5 speakers for 70mm 2001 going on the stage horns had very good crisp vocal, you could tell It had 6 track mag sound at one time. Very hi end dialogue moving dimensional all over the stage speakers. Let's hope some day the Castro will get some new amps and larger surround speakers to surround you in his one of a kind cinema. They even played the pipe organ when you came in for the 4 30PM 70mm showing. The giant noisy curtain track curtains closed with the theme for 2001 on the organ before the main 2001 feature started.  |  IP: Logged Sam D. I’m running a print (don’t remember the print number offhand) at The Regal Continental in Denver through the 21st. The print isn’t perfect, but it’s pretty good, A-/B+. The only thing that makes me sad is that there is ZERO press on this run, nothing. BUT If you forget to send out the invitations, plan on the committee having a wonderful, though under attended, time." Just that it happens everywhere. Registered: Jun 99 posted 06-16-2018 01:49 PM                     Same thing here in Northern New Jersey, where a 70mm print is running at the AMC Garden State 16 in Paramus with nothing more than a Fandango listing.
