Even though there is an obvious Technics SL series fetish in this forum, of which I suffer myself, on a price to quality graph, the Rega really makes sense. It's no frills, but some audiophiles like that, in fact some downright refuse to have graphic equalisation of any kind.
As far as record wear is concerned, you can play a record once with a slightly chipped stylus and ruin it forever, but with a perfect stylus and setup like you mentioned... The RIAA states that the frequency respose drops: 20 kHz after one play 18 kHz after three plays 17 kHz after five 16 kHz after eight 14 kHz after fifteen 13 kHz after twenty five 10 kHz after thirty five 8 kHz after eighty plays This is all fine, but alot has to do with the crap the previous owner was playing it on. Way back when, people didn't see the stuff as collectable so they probably just threw it around at parties, or maybe they did know and just didn't care.
A lot has to do with the quality the record had when it was produced, if the stamper was worn, it was crap to start with, but I have played records many, many times and not heard much degradation, but if it was a $500 record, I would probably just buy the CD.
