So when will he re-re-re-re-release it in 3D? Didn't he announce that they were going to 3D-ize them at some point? And that was before there was home 3DTVs. I imagine the incentive now that he can release them in 3D theatrically and then do a 3D BluRay release will be overwhelming for the STAR WARS factory. STAR WARS -- that's one prolific golden egg-laying goose.

I'm guessing those original edition DVDs were direct ports of the laser disks.
That's what I recall hearing. I also recall Lucasfilm claiming that's the best they could do in regards to the original versions anymore, as if original negatives no longer existed (which I'd find hard to believe, yet we ARE talking Lucas here).

Frank - The theatrical 3D releases are supposed to start next year with one movie per year, in the numerical saga order. (Episode I first)

Mike-I am pretty sure Episode I will be tested in 3D before they commit to the other five. At least that was my understanding.

I cannot see Star Wars in 3D doing well at all. Titanic yes/maybe but Star Wars. NO.

Star Wars movies of any flavor on the big screen will do very well.

Star Wars episode IV has already been at least partially converted and shown as a test. Fellow forum member Christopher Duvall has seen it at his theater.

He's full of crap. I know of private collectors that have IB prints of the original Episode IV and very pristine LPP prints of the original Jedi. If you think Lucas doesn't have an original IB print in his vault, and Spielberg doesn't have one, and Copolla doesn't have one, you're crazy. Of course they exist. Those could easily be scanned and cleaned up even if the negatives don't exist and we'd have something better than we have now. Empire might be harder since most of those prints are faded to some degree. But again, they are out there, and it could easily be done.

Well, let's put it in perspective... cleaning up and getting good decent HD masters of the original three films would be easier than creating the right eye out of thin air for all six movies.

How does one go about meeting these people and arranging a screening?

They're private collectors who collect things for their own enjoyment. There's no method of reaching them.

University film archives and other non-profit film preservation societies probably have prints too.

My point is they are out there, and "that's the best we can do" is a bunch of crap.

The powers that be are quite aware that 3-D or no 3-D, Episode IV on the big screen will be the biggest draw of them all. (That's what happened with the 1997 rerelease of the original trilogy special editions.)

Personally I think they should forget about I, II and III and just release IV, V and VI if they're going to do it. Or, do the 3-month program with the first three, and then go to one per year with the last three.

Anyway, this is a project that's been in progress for years. I saw 20 minutes of test footage of Episode IV at an industry convention about 6 or 7 years ago. (And was not much impressed.)

True that. I'll take it one tick further; ask a studio about almost any classic you want to book and pretty much what they tell you about what they have or don't have is, 80% of the time, a bunch of crap.

And you have to consider that Lucas himself has said that the only version of the trilogy that exist are the Special Editions. He thinks that because he says that the Special Edition movies are cannon that the earlier versions will be forgotten.

So it should come as no surprise that he would use any and all excuses available to not give you the original movie.

3D conversion technology will also continue to get better and better. By the time the first movie is finished being converted, George will want to re-do it "because the technology at the time did not permit him to fully utilize his vision", or some such nonsense.

He may just keep re-issuing the 6 of them in 6 year cycles so he can 'keep up with the latest 3D technology'.

(Sigh...)

There was a claim I read somewhere but can't find now to the effect that the opening crawl on the OE disc of ANH was a new transfer from an original 1977 print (hence, it omits the text "Episode IV: A New Hope"), surely that entire print could be scanned and cleaned up for Blu-Ray.

Supposedly the BD editions are going to be GL's final, definitive word on the subject, to which I respectfully say: Bullshit! You'll potchka with these films till you're on your deathbed, and leave detailed instructions in your last will and testament as to how they should be potchka'd with further for years to come. And double bullshit! The versions you released to theaters in 1977, 1980 and 1983 are the definitive versions, anything else is... New Coke.
