A friend who watched that Harry Potter screening with me was worried that the sound would still have that distortion on Friday, when he was planning to take his whole family to see The Polar Express in 3-D. So I wanted to put a bug in someone's ear through this forum. Well, my friend reports that the Polar Express screening on November 25th was flawless. So... no hard feelings. Jordan Commons has done so many things right that it would be difficult for them to do anything "wrong enough" to lose my business. But I'll still whine if there's something that doesn't make me perfectly happy.

I just wanted you to know, Stewart, that "the audience is listening."

Richard, I'm assuming that's with an MPX system, and as far as I know the software for the MPX is about 5 years newer than that for the GT and SR systems, maybe that's a side effect. But as far as I know, with the GT at least, there's no easy way to say "Alright, this has to be one frame [forward/back]", and trying to will usually screw it up further.

It doesnt matter what model projector, The projector just mechanically sends pulses from a tach. I am assuming Imax is the same? I don't know. The tach then sends these pulses to a time code generator, and the playback unit syncs to the SMPTE? Maybe this DTAC unit takes longer to change its position on the hard drive?

Richard, You are correct about the tach in the projector sending pulses (just like any other), I'm not sure if the time code generator is an interal or external part of the DTAC.
If I had to guess your probably running a tach to a DTS-E480 generator to a DTS 6D or the new generator (the 740 or whatever) on a DTS XD10. As I understand it IMAX has there own format of digital sound which probably complicates the whole process a little.

no, the tach goes to a different brand timecode generator, which then sends SMPTE T/C to a Fostex or Tascam. very few of the installs that I have done use DTS anymore. Everything is shipped on tape, then transferred to a Fostex hard drive for playback. It is a very reliable setup.

I can't imagine not being able to adjust sync on the fly!! Even my MTM dubbers have an advance/retard on the fly.
