I saw the presentation at the El Capitan, about a week ago. The pre-show trailers were also projected from the "upstairs" double-image projectors...with a surprising side effect: At the end of the last trailer, as the curtain was dropping, you could observe errors between the two images in the logos at the bottom of the screen. You could see clearly (we were not yet using the 3D glasses) that there were double images, off registration (white titles on a black background). But only at the very bottom of the screen. And only briefly, as the curtain finished dropping within a few seconds. The rest of the image area seemed to be converged fine, though I'd like to see a test image on there!

In other words, the twin projectors are overlapping each other, and converged as well as they can be ... but that booth is WAY UP THERE, so I imagine the down angle is on the order of 25 degrees. Or more. So, even with sophisticated keystone correction and other optical tricks, the convergence at the bottom of the screen is none too good, at least on 2D images. The projectors are 2K devices, but not Christie, and not Barco.

During "Chicken Little", I tried tipping my head slightly off-level, and the annoying "leak" of light for the "other" eye was almost zero. By tilting my head to a right angle of where it should be, the 3D image still worked but not as well. So, from that standpoint, the circular polarization is very effective.

Can the circular polarization method be used with two-strip 3D film screenings as well, or does it only work with DLP?

My guess would be that the 2 projectors were aimed to converge at a distance which was the plane of the screen. Since the curtain is closer to the projectors than the screen, the images were not yet fully converged on them.

I can also confirm that the El Capitan, along with a couple of other larger auditoriums are using two projectors to increase the light output.
Which other theatres are running dual system?

Again, what is the largest screen that the single projector system can light properly? [Confused]

Good question. The screen at the El Capitan is actually quite small for such a large house (somewhere around 40 feet) and if the image had been thrown from the normal downstairs booth (which is pretty close to the screen)it is definitely in line with what one would find in a normal multiplex.

Let's rephrase the question: For those who are running "Chicken Little" 3D on a single projector system, what is your image size? What is your screen luminance (footlamberts) when measured through the glasses? [Confused]

OK, How many screens have been changed to Chronicles or Narnia, or are you still running Chicken Little 3D?

I guess this is as good a place to post this as any. Cinemark 17 in Springfield is installing the DLP Real D 3D system here for "Monster House". All tickets for the 3D show are priced $1.50 higher than normal. (Thanks to Michael Coate for the tip.)

EDIT: I see Michael already posted info on this in Film-Yak. D'oh!
