According to the Rentrak website, the three Columbus/Cincinnati theatres with the Chicken in 3D were the top three Cincinnati branch grossers on Friday night.

Looks like having the Digital 3D helped them, but I don't know if it will be worth the investment. These theatres are usually not the top three grossers in the Cincinnati branch, but the conventional 35 mm theatres are not that far behind.

Which word is it that's attracting the extra people, 'Digital, or '3-D' do we have any figures for venues showing it in digital, but not in 3-D? Can anybody confirm my undertanding that the 3-D version is only available in digital, so there are no figures for how well a 3-D presentation on film would do?

There have been many cases in the past where a small number of cinemas have installed equipment for some process that has only been used briefly before either it is replaced by something better, or it just dies out, maybe it was too expensive, or the public just lost interest. From what I've read, the system does seem to have certain advantages over film-based 3-D systems, but It's simply too early yet to tell whether the installation of the equipment for digital 3-D would be a worthwhile investment. Something to keep an eye on, and see how things develop.

I can't find it now, but on a link I saw somewhere it said that the Odeon Leicester Square would be running it in 3-D, but not opening until February 2006; later than just about anywhere else in the World. Does anyone know if this date is correct, and, if so, why itis opening so late here?

It will open February 3 in Sweden. So you´re in good company.
No 3D at all in Sweden, as far as I know.

BTW, unless I've miscounted, there are 83, not 84, digital 3-D engagements since one of the new installs is in a theater that won't open for another couple of weeks. Plus, those four Mexico engagements appear to be among the 84 (83).

(And what happened to #85? [Smile] )

84 & 85 would be the two screens at Regal's Union Square Stadium 14 in NYC.

BO estimates for opening weekend: $40.9M overall, with $2.1M from the 3D version. The 3D total is equivalent to what Polar Express earned in 59 IMAX theaters its opening weekend (Fri-Sun. Polar earned $3M its first five days Wed-Sun. It should be noted that around 3 to 4 of the Polar IMAX prints were not 3D).

No. I counted Union Square as one. Counting it as two would make it engagement numbers 83 & 84. That still leaves #85 unaccounted for, unless one of the other venues is running it on two screens.

(I suppose #85 could be the MJR complex that opens in the Detroit area in a couple of weeks.)

I don't think this was mentioned in previous posts. If it was discussed, I'm sorry.

For those of you that have this installed, in respect to your entire complex, what size theatre was this placed in. IE: Large house, medium and seat count of house. Also, did anyone receive a backup print to have ready, just in case?

I imagine that you are hooked into at least 4 weeks of screen time regardless of performance, so performance of new releases might suffer at your location because of a locked in engagement run.

Our booking system shows the Pleasure Island AMC having it on two screens. Did you count both of those?

Ok, heres our weekend recap....

Just to refresh, we had 2 3-D prints, and 1 35mm.
The combined capacity of the 2 3-D houses was still only about 75% of the capacity of the 35mm house.

The breakdown is as follows: 31% of the total gross came from the 35mm print, while 69% of our gross was from 3-D, or in other words, the 3-d prints grossed 226% more than the other.

So even with less capacity, the 3-d blew the 35mm out of the water.

Would anyone else like to share/comment?

We've got three stages of house size, pretty much. Our previous DLP and the newly installed one for Chicken Little went in the upper-middle. Not our biggest houses, but still on south-side projection; the larger, nicer, new-this-week movie houses.

Our largest houses are in the 500-seat range. The digitals are 250-seat, or so, auditoriums. Stadium seating. Then we've got the smaller less-than-200-seat ones, some stadium and some not-so-stadium. Pretty average for a 21-plex, I would imagine.

I don't know about any 35mm backup prints, but we are on screen with a second Chicken Little, in 35mm.

I have a couple of questions concerning how the projection works on CHICKEN LITTLE, now that I've seen it at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood (this is not a review of the film itself. As far as the 3-D is concerned I find myself agreeing with Brian that for the most part the image stops at the screen level (very little pop-out).

First of all, is this supposed to be projected from just one projector? I could detect absolutely no light beam coming out of the projector in the main level booth at the El Capitan. They DID have a projector with a large filter labeled "Digital 3-D" or words to that effect on a bracket hanging in front of the lens. But I looked carefully in this main floor both and saw absolutely nothing coming out of the projector. So during the end credits I walked up front towards the screen and looked back. I saw TWO beams of light coming from the old projection booth way up high, each from the seperate portals. So what's up with this? Are left and right images being projected from two seperate projectors? I was wondering how one fixed filter could properly polarize to different images coming from the same projector (without the over and under/side by side thechnique, that is).
