Mark...the list has been updated. In addition to Columbus, I've added several new Ohio entries, plus one for Erlanger, Kentucky (part of greater Cincinnati).

BTW, the latest additions to the list have pushed the Real D locations past 400. Several new entries have been added, mostly from exhibitors AMC, Cinemark, National Amusements (Cinema de Lux, Showcase Cinemas, etc.) and Wehrenberg.

In the UK vue cinemas are getting the film in 3D at their flagship West End site this Friday, this will be an exclusive engagement in Central London. I think they must have a deal with Disney because instead of the usual £12 for an adult ticket it's £7.00 for everyone, same as Chicken Little 3D. I'll probably go on Friday afternoon to check it out.

I guess you can add
AMC Regency 20 in Brandon Fl to that list, our install is happening this thursday. We're an older theatre, we do a lot of buisness but don't really get much attention when it comes to new things. So I'm rather excited about getting to be the PM that gets to recieve this.

I just got back from seeing a preview showing at Cincinnati, Ohio's, Showcase Springdale.
So you can add this one to the list as well.

My opinion was that while the 3-D affect was interesting, the film itself didn't have a lot of content that exploited it.
To me it was kind of a waste to have it in 3-D - purely a marketing thing I suppose.

It seems to me that since 3D comes closer to replicating human vision, that should be the default form of photography. Movies should only use 2D when there's a good reason instead of the other way around.

The Seattle D-3D screening was a bust. For reasons not explained, the projector would not work (according to the manager). We saw the screening in 35mm.

It seems to me that since 3D comes closer to replicating human vision, that should be the default form of photography.

3D is a gimmick and nothing more. If a movie has a good story and is compelling, it doesn't need 3D or any other gimmicks. It can be in black and white and still pull you in.

You might as well say that moving images and sound are gimmicks. I agree with you that 3D and color are not necessary to tell a good story, but just because they are more technologically advanced doesn't mean they are any more gimmicky than 2D and B&W. In fact, what I'm arguing is that 2D and B&W are actually more gimmicky, because they are more abstract.

That's not to say that both can't be used very effectivey. I just think that it's better to start with reality as a base, and only add levels of abstraction when there's a reason, of which there are many.

I'll take the opportunity to restate one of the main problems of showing movies in 3D: the audience is made to do something very un-natural with their eyes.

In normal human binocular vision the point of convergence where both eyes are aimed matches the distance of focus. Both points are aligned.

That isn't the same in 3D movie viewing. You focus on a fixed object, the screen. The point of convergence is moved in front of and behind the screen. Even though a person's eyes can do this sort of "double action" trick, the activity isn't something most people can maintain for long periods of time. I would call it outright torture to expect any audience to watch a 3 hour movie in 3D. Many can't take more than an hour to 90 minutes of that stuff.

With that stated (again), I think its perfectly fine for most movies to be shot in traditional 2D form. 3D can be a lot of fun, but it really is a niche format -possibly even more of a niche format than things like IMAX.

I guess my personal definition of a "gimmick" is any time you have to endure something other than "just sitting and watching." Having to wear glasses that are uncomfortable to start with, and don't fit properly (especially for any small kid or person wearing regular glasses) makes for an unpleasant experience.

I watched a 30-minute RealD presentation at the Great States convention a couple of years ago and I wound up taking the glasses off halfway through just to relieve the uncomfortable feeling they were giving me. To sit thru a 2-hour film, it better be a DAMN good movie if it's going to make me forget I'm wearing a cheap set of plasticwear.

Whereas with a good movie, you just sit there and it flows over you effortlessly whether it's in 3D or 2D, digital or analog, sound or silent.

Bobby, I understand how the conflicting points of convergence and focus can be bothersome for some people. I've never had a problem with it, although I haven't watched a 3-hour 3D movie either. But from what I have seen, it seems like as long as the point of convergence is "behind" the screen, it's not really an issue. Either way, that might be a valid reason to choose 2D over 3D. However, I'd still argue that 3D comes closer to the way we see than 2D does.

Well hopefully someday in the near future, you'll be able to go to the mall and buy a pair Oakleys with circular polarization to take with you to the multiplex where you can sit and watch the newest stereoscopic masterpiece in both comfort and style! [Cool]

But until then, uncomfortable eyeware may also be a good reason to choose 2D over 3D.

Everyone is different. Some people love cottage cheeze. Get any of that stuff near me and I promise I will vomit.

An audiences' tolerance of 3D also varies. Most people can usually handle a 40 minute to 1 hour IMAX 3D movie without suffering much eye strain. A 2 hour running time is going to be pretty demanding or even unbearable for a significant amount of the audience. And that doesn't even get into the issues of audience members who already have problems with their sight. That could be one major reason why most 3D stuff lately has been movies for kids with running times under 90 minutes.

Keeping the point of convergence locked at or behind the screen would defeat the purpose of showing a movie in 3D. It would look as though the movie were taking place inside a rectangular box. And you wouldn't have any of those in-your-face effects, such as Jason mashing in some dude's skull until his eyeballs shot out into your lap.

I could spend a lot of time shooting holes through that argument. Simply put, most 3D movies look like the depth effect is exaggerated.

What's the problem with that? Based on the latest crop of 3D movies, it seems that this is the direction we're headed.
