At this stage in the game, it would be financial suicide for a studio to release any major film in 3-D only, which is why so far we've only see repository titles like Nightmare Before Christmas, and films with very little in the way of production costs like Hannah Montana, as far as films only available in 3-D. There just aren't enough 3-D screens out there yet for a major 3-D only release to be possible.
This raises an interesting point however, if Dreamworks plans to release all their upcoming titles from now on in 3-D, does that mean there's not going to be a 2-D release at all? Are they going to pressure exhibitors to increase the adoption rate on the Real D projectors to ensure that there's at least one theater in every major market in the country that has one? As of right now that's certainly not the case at all. Eventually it's going to become push vs shove with the studios jumping on this 3-D Bandwagon against the Exhibitors forced to adopt the expensive equipment to support it, and I think in the end, the exhibitors are going to win.
Check me off in the 3-D is a gimmick that people will quickly get tired of, category.
