Posts: 12814 From: Annapolis, MD Registered: Dec 1999 posted 04-08-2010 07:55 PM                     The only variants on size were the older (EFIB board based) 1920 x1038 Flat and 1920 x 804 Scope for 3D only...again, all current projectors need not deal with that and the will become but a thing of the past to accommodate early systems. That said, 1920 based images are still current for HDTV so they are not too strange. But as others have said...DCinema, currently comes down to 4 formats 2D/3D, Scope/Flat...not terribly many and from the projector standpoint there are really only two (Flat/Scope)...the 2D/3D has more to do with processing the images (left eye/right eye) than image size or pixel count. No late KDMs, no technical glitches, no freezeups, no repairs needed, no nothing but a clean image and sound every single time. Maybe the issues Tony references are either caused by operator error or deliberate sabotage. I wonder how many of the kiddos here will get that reference.  |  IP: Logged Jonathan Smith Expert Film Handler Posts: 201 From: Youngstown, OH Registered: Jan 2010 posted 04-17-2010 02:34 PM                     For fun, I did the math the other day, and the only format that has *improved* due to 2K DIs is the S35 blowup to scope for movies that can't afford to shoot with anamorphic lenses and 4-perf. pulldowns. Flat, native scope films all look worse because of 2K. In some cases, like with scope, quality has been cut in half since the contact printing days. The only format where 2K DLPs, statistically, look better than 35mm films from 2K DIs (which are then copied three times) is with a FLAT film. Scope movies, because of the anamorphic stretch, are actually HIGHER resolution output on film, even after copying them three times. So that's why I hate D-cinema. It's improved low budget S35 blowup (Gladiator is the only one I ever saw that was any good)quality, and made the previously crystal-clear scope and very nice flat films look far far worse. And because of the idiotic method of just cropping the chip on most 2K projectors, it makes scope movies look still WORSE on the big screen to watch them in DLP. 3D has been beaten to death so I won't even bother to talk about foot-lamberts and light loss. . .  |  IP: Logged
