From what I've heard from my booth tech, Cinemark is trying to distance themselves from the IMAX label. They're trying to get XD up an running, with 2 screens open now and another 11 by the end of the year. They guarantee 70 ft screens and can put any film on screen, including 3D.

Absolutely! Cinemark is very smart in doing this move. With 4K DLP and it's high brightness ability on the near horizon and they being the ones installing it Chain wide why would they need Imax. They may get 4K DLp even before Imax does... And there IS actually far more digital programming available to large format type theaters if they stay away from Imax!!

I'd go see Cinemark's new thing before I would go to a fake IMAX. The question is this: Does Cinemark charge extra for their XD or whatever they call it?

$12 adult, $10 child for 2D, $14 adult, $12 child for 3D. no matinee or evening change of pricing, same every day of the week. 3 screens in california, 2 more in texas, 1 in new mexico, maryland, alaska, illinois, arizona, and vegas.

One other thing is that size does matter and the impact of the image is not only due to viewing angle as IMAX seems to believe. Our brains know if the screen is BIG as opposed to sitting close to a smaller screen.

Sit a foot from your TV and see if it feels like IMAX to you. It doesn't remotely. That's because you know the screen isn't big due to other visual cues.

Just got back from the new digimax at the new southeast cinemas. The sound was definitely on par with IMAX and the screen was a decent size. However, due to the size of the screen and the distance from it (about 1\2 way back) I could clearly see the pixels in the picture. It definitely didn't have the wow factor. It was still above par but not an IMAX for sure. I saw The Dark Knight BTW.

Cinemark's newest XD theater is opening this weekend in Pittsburg, PA, and their pricing is:

quote:
Adult Evening $8.25
Adult Fri/Sat after 6pm $8.75
Child (1-11) /Senior (62+) $5.75
Adult Matinee before 6pm $6.00
Early Bird 1st Matinee Showtime of any title (7 days a week). $5.00
Note: Check below for multiple listings of a movie (i.e. DLP, Digital, Regular, 3D, etc.) to find first showtime
Military (with valid ID) $7.00
Seniors Day - All Day Monday - any movie, any showtime $5.00
All Day Tuesday (holidays excluded) $5.25

XD Adult - $10.50
XD Child/Senior $8.50
XD REAL D 3D Adult - $12.50
XD REAL D 3D Child/Senior $10.00
3D Attraction - Normal Ticket Price Plus Premium $3.00

So that would make the XD an upgrade of between $4.50 (matinee) and $1.75 (Fri/Sat eve) for adults.

That's an upgrade price I'd be willing to pay, but only if everything about the presentation was spot-on. The big picture is just one part of a larger equation, so one would hope that they are getting the rest of it right as well.

That array of choices is going to drive the consumer nuts. People will think, "Great, we've got $40 to spare, let's go to the movies!" and then get there and find it's going to cost them $70 instead.

Someone should not have to pay for the premium of a presentation done right

So its ok to pay a premium for a 3D experience, but not ok to pay extra for a large-screen experience?

Not if you are projecting crap on the large screen (not that this is what XD is; I am referring to the fake IMAX).

BTW, does anyone know what the future of the traditional IMAX screens/Omnimax is?

I am really hoping they'll keep 15-perf. around, not for blowups, but certainly for the docs and big budget blockbusters that actually have portions shot on IMAX cameras.

It's not OK to pay a premium for EITHER. Even for a super-huge gigantic 200-story tall IMAX combined with 3D I wouldn't pay a cent more. Using this logic, theaters had damn well better charge LESS for their smallest auditoriums. Guess what, they don't! Greedy fucks. That is directed at ALL of you who charge more for the bigger screen and don't charge less for the smallest screens.

Dan Klussman (of I.M.E.) has been saying for years that theatres ought to charge more for big hit movies and less for flops...thereby hopefully encouraging people to see a less-popular movie. I suppose the same thinking could be applied to auditorium sizes.

Doesn't make sense... If theaters charged more then distribution would simply want more... There IS a catch 22 aspect to this whole thing after all.

Well, distribution keeps wanting more even WITHOUT exhibitors charging more...
