But that could just as well mean only the partnership in 2*2k and laser projection, not necessarily Auro 3D? Still my best guess is that is is indeed Auro 3D, but no heavy Auro branding applied.

got a Facebook message from the Smithsonian that with the conversion to laser projectors next January-March (2015) the audio will upgraded to the 12-track system ...

now I wonder what film(s) will be encoded as such

I heard the first pilot IMAX laser-installations were due to open with the Hobbit - anything known wether they actually succeeded?

I'm doubting it since Warren Theaters is claiming to have "the first and only" laser projection systems in full time operation when its new Broken Arrow Warren multiplex opens on December 23.

The laser projection systems are installed in their two "Grand Infinity" auditoriums. They're Christie 6P systems (don't know if they're single or dual head though). The sound systems are THX certified and feature Dolby Atmos wired in its maximum 64-channel configuration.

I think there are at least three or four Barco 6P systems in regular operation since last week, opening with The Hobbit III:

Still remains to be seen how the IMAX laser system performs, but I think I would prefer a 'conventional' Barco or Christie 6p system with color separation 3D and ATMOS sound system.

According to LF Examiner, the world's first permanent laser-illuminated digital projector installation was a Christie system in Shanghai [China] Film Art Center in June.

Moody Gardens in Galveston, Texas, was the second in November, installing Christie Duo 6P 4K.

Five days later the Seattle Cinerama installed a Christie 6P system.

IMAX's first laser system is scheduled to open this month in Toronto for THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES.

I don't know how much truth there is to Warren's claim of having the first 4K laser projectors in operation in the United States. I guess that would have to be qualified by some variables. Are the projectors at the Seattle Cinerama and Moody Gardens 4K? Did Bill Warren buy his projectors before those guys?

I've seen The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies in dual 4K laser projector color separated 3D HFR AND Atmos...

Although the technology is capable of doing 60FPS 3D in 4K, The Hobbit is only 2K 48FPS. Still, the picture is remarkably bright... Too bright actually, because it enhances the "soap opera" effect of the HFR even further actually.

Bobby does it really matter if Bill bought them before others if he is late to install them before others? I think Bill is just tooting his own horn with the first install stuff. Unless he has something that no one else does.

It really makes no difference who installed the first laser projection systems, I am not sure why Bobby cares so much, I believe Cinerama in Seattle was the first or they claim to be the first.

He made 2 posts on the matter total, the first of which was answering a question posed. That's hardly obsessed.

The Smithsonian just released this new press release:

Over the next few months the IMAX Theater at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center will be undergoing renovations to upgrade to the first major technological innovation since the advent of digital projection-the new laser digital projection system! The IMAX GT (Grand Theater) Laser Digital Projection System is designed to replace IMAX film projection systems, which have long been the most advanced theater projection systems in use. 3D content will fill the six-story IMAX screen with stunning brightness, clarity, and contrast, and will also contain more brilliant colors than have been possible to date with any theater projection system. Complementing the projection system will be a brand new, multi-channel and multi-dimensional sound system that will allow viewers to hear sounds at specific points in the theater space. During this transition to the laser digital projection the Airbus IMAX Theater is expected to close towards the end of February with completion and re-opening slated for April. The Lockheed Martin IMAX Theater at the National Air and Space Museum and the Samuel C. Johnson IMAX Theater at the National Museum of Natural History will be fully operational during this time frame.
