I hated the first one and from the looks of things I really don't have to see this one.

I thought it was ok. It was definitely a bit long, and they absolutely tried too hard on many of the scenes to outdo the original. That being said, I didn't particularly care for the original after the first viewing, but it grew on me. This one may be the same situation.

My biggest beef with it is that the movie has George Lucas syndrome. There is WAY too much cgi and weird looking characters in this thing. I wish Hollywood would realize that cgi must be used in moderation.

Other than that, it wasn't great, but it wasn't bad.

In order to fully appreciate this movie all one needs is RUM... A few more memorable parts of the movie is when Kiera told them to throw the rum on because they didn't have enough explosives. And the absolute best part is the gift of the undead monkey. Most hilarious is Captain Jack slow-mo attack upon the vagina-like sea monster.

Actually Allison, you might want to take all of May 2007 off...Spider-Man 3 and Shrek 3 are on the release calandar as well!

It seems I'm in the minority here as I really liked the film. I especially got a kick out of the references to the Disneyland ride: characters and situations that were dreamed up nearly half a centry ago that are sprinkled throughout the film. I think its probably just pulling on sentimental memories from my younger years, but seeing that guy in the well and the firefly lit bayou made me grin throughout the film. I find that I have a hard time thinking about the movie outside of this experience, and I know that this positively skews my appreciation for the movie. But so be it, thats the baggage I brought into the theater.

I agree. The last one was on 2393 stock (as is SUPERMAN RETURNS), and this one is on 2383 stock, but still the colors shouldn't have looked THAT muddy. Part of the appeal of the other one for me was the bright colors on all of the outfits, the blue waters, etc. It was beautiful to look at. This one has pretty low contrast, and takes on a whole different look for me. And wasn't the original also an ES/EX mix? I guess they did this one on the cheap.

That aside, I enjoyed the movie. I thought it could have been a little shorter, but not much. I don't think that I liked this one as much as the first one. Like someone else said, this one is to Black Pearl what Temple of Doom was to Raiders. But still, I think this series is the Raiders of the Lost Ark for this generation. And the box office tally is a message to Hollywood: "Make movies that people want to see, and they will come see them." Hollywood will probably miss that message all together though.

For some reason, I thought that the pole vaulting thing was one of the funniest slap-your-forehead moments I've ever seen in a movie.

But isn't the trick knowing what people want? When the first Pirates came out, noone thought "Hey, a Johnny Depp Pirate Movie based on a theme park ride, now that's an instant hit!"

Making movies is a crapshoot. Producers are just rolling the dice.

Tried to get in to the digital show but it was sold out. Popped in to the digital show for 5-minutes before going to my film show. First thought was 'Yep, this looks like video.'

Film show ran slightly out of focus and had a light base scratch through the print. As I was stuck on the middle I couldn't go bitch about it. Got a pass at the end though.

Johnny Dep looked like he was having fun. Too bad the rest of the movie sucked. It was a two and a half hour set up for the next movie.

Also, why is Captain Sparrow's crew no longer the undead, like they were in the first movie? Did I miss something in the first movie?

Digital sells better than film. Who wants to see film? Even you preferred digital when purchasing your ticket. Digital is perfect. Film is in its final days.

Ian, they undid the curse at the end of the first movie by returning all the treasure. That's how Barbossa died, Sparrow shot him when the last piece of treasure was returned and the curse was lifted.
