But isn't the trick knowing what people want?
The masses of people want to see a good story teller tell a good story, escape from their daily grind, and have FUN when they go to a movie. I'm not saying other movie genres don't have their place, because they do. But if you want to get the masses out, a good story, escape, and fun is a good formula, and it always has been. The last movie was, generally speaking, a lot of fun. And that's why people are coming to see this one. And judging from their reactions as they're leaving, they're having fun with this one too, which means repeat business.

I think if you could tally up the film-tech movie reviews, you would find far more negative reviews than positive. Some people on here seem to never like any movie.
You also have to consider how most of us do not choose what movies we watch. We dont look in the paper and say "oh that looks like something I'd like." We just get stuck with whatever opens that week.

Chris: You have a good understanding of "critic's lament:" he has to see all the films. Believe me the bad outnumber the good by 5 to 1 or better. Louis

(How many close after 7 days?.... a lot.)

Ahhh, I'd peg it at more like a 90 to 1 ratio. I can always count the good films on just one hand at the end of the year, and I love films. Follywood lately has just lost it completely.

And people bitched about King King being too long and or slow . . . . this latest Pirates' needless talking heads & usesless drawn out scenes tops them all.
It could have been sensational entertainment at 90 minutes but at 2.5 hours . . . . . . . . ho hum . . [sleep]

'Pirates OTC' without Geoffrey Rush is like Disney's 'Treasure Island' without Robert Newton - 'Long John Silver'.

Hopefully, the 3rd 'Pirates' will give us a really good show like 'Curse of the Black Pearl' and finally . . . . Geoffrey's back in on this one [thumbsup]

Theatre: Carmike 7, Grand Junction, CO
Show: Weekday, 5 PM
Attendance: 'bout 30

Lobby: This theatre has just started showing weekday films before 7 PM. The lobby/concession stand has pretty much remained the same for over 15 years with the major change being that the video games are hardly used anymore. Cleaning supplies, vacuums and brooms propped on walls all over the hallways (sort of like watching an ugly woman dress....)

Auditorium: Very unclean floors (a little girl behind us said "Eeeeuuuu" as her shoes stuck to the floor. You could hear the stickiness.) It's clear they didn't mop or clean last night. (Clean floors and lit light bulbs are the FIRST signs that the owner/manager cares about presentation.) Exit light to screen R was powered by a mini-Trooper and cast a huge light wash on the screen. Irritating. Lady of the Lake trailer looked as if it had been projected over a million times w/o Film Guard.

The film: A bit soft focus. Dragged in many parts and the story barely made sense if at all. Too long and often didn't hang together. No detail on Davy Jones' ship, just mush everywhere. In spite of that, it had great production values, wonderful throwaway lines and was very much fun. Can't wait until we find out what happened to the heart and why, but really don't care.

Rating based on what the film was supposed to do: 4 out of 5.

I give it 1 out of 5. And I liked the first one.
Trimming 30 minutes off would of helped greatly.

And I lost count of the incredible amount of lab splices I saw.
[Eek!]

Today 7/16/2006, 11:30AM, Regal Cinema World 8 in Eugene, House #3, SR•D. Maybe 25-30 in attendance. The feature looked and sounded great, print in perfect condition (except for couple of lab splices), looked like it was built with extra care with most of the reel-change splices almost unnoticeable. [beer]

According to my movie rating code (really more of a guideline), a movie is "too long" if I look at my watch more than once. I looked at my watch a LOT today. Now that's not to say "Pirates" isn't entertaining or that they didn't pull out all the stops to give the audience its money's worth. It is and they did. But damn, this just seemed to go on way longer than necessary. Cut out 20-30 minutes and I think they'd have a better movie.

That said, it entertained me. Some of the special effects are actually special too. 3 out of 5 stars from me.

I am no film snob. But I find the maassive success of the Pirates of the Carribbean(POTC- not to be confused wth Passion of the Christ) movies very puzzling. It is one of those mysteries where i ponder how I can be so out of touch with the mainstream.

I enjoy a lot of mainstream action movies. I enjoyed Johnny Depp in the first one. But for the life of me, I dont understand what about these movies make many many people rush to the theater and watch this in such massive numbers.

I liked POTC1 and thought maybe it would be a 150M movie. Didnt expect the massive hit status.
I didn't hate POTC2, but barely tolerated it. It was damn boring at times in the first half and I struggled to stay awake. Once they hit the beach, then I was able to stay awake. Stellan's character as Bloom's dad seemed interesting. So did Nighy's Davy Jones. But not enough good scenes to justify 150 freaking minutes.

At least 45 min should have been chopped off this borefest. Hans Zimmer puts out an obnoxious loud score. God, I hate this guy.

Depp, while still enjoyable, was reduced to hamming it up for the camera and get some easy laughs (no better than your typical Wayans Bros. comedy). But since it is DEpp, people will overpraise the comedy aspect of the movie.

THe worst thing, I have to endure another 2 and half hours to finish the damn story?

Davey Jones (awesome make up)
I think it was actually all CGI!
The movie: OK, but not really great. I didn't know that they made this to be the middle piece of a trilogy, so I was surprised by the open ending. I wonder how they will explain Capt. Barbossa coming back. But I think that's good. I liked him much better in the first movie than Depp who got a little on my nerves here with his shtick.
Did anybody understand what the voodoo lady in the hut said?
The bit where Depp shoots the monkey he has brought as a gift - "look, an undead monkey" - was actually the only bit I found really funny.

I'll start off by saying that this was a rare split decision between myself and my fiance. I liked it, she didn't. She didn't like the first one on first viewing either but it grew on her later.

Was this as good as the first one? Absolutely not. Was it a cinematic masterpiece? No. Was it too long? Yes, probably by 1/2 hour.

But, it was fun and entertaining. A good (but not great) popcorn movie. I don't know how this is a kids movie. It is very violent and the creatures from "Return of the Jedi" oops I mean the bottom of the ocean were gross! I agree with the sentiment that it was basically a long trailer for part 3. They should have opened the credits with "Pirates of the Carribean: At Worlds End coming Memorial Day 2007."

I say 2 1/2 out of 5.

You don't have to wait to find out what happened to it, they showed it. Former Commodore Norrington stole it and gave it to the guy that took over the port from the Governor in return for being reinstated.

She was difficult to understand at times, if you're talking about the very end she basically asked if the crew was willing to go to the end of the word (hence the subtitle of part 3 "At Worlds End") to recover Jack. It is kind of insinuated that it means to get him back from the dead.

The voodoo lady did explain it. She told them that if they were going to find Jack "at Worlds End" they would need a captain to guide them that had been there. So, Barbossa managed to escape from "Worlds End" and therefore brought himself back.

I understood that, but I didn't understand what she said in the middle of the movie.

OK, that makes sense. So, "World's End" is basically like the Realm of the Dead. Where they would find Captain Sparrow. OK.

Why did Zimmer get to score it? What happened to Klaus Badelt? His first score (and particularly the theme) was just fine.

Good question on the composer. I thought the score to this one was aweful save for the re-use of the theme from the first one.

Same here. I found the score almost annoying. The same Zimmer dumdeedumdeedum as always.
