May Expert Film Handler Posts: 243 From: Los Angeles, CA Registered: Jan 2006 posted 03-19-2012 09:57 AM                     Re the shape of shipping cases: My earliest experience with 35mm film was in the late 1940s, and the hexagonal cases were the standard for theatrical shipping. Many of these went back many years, probably to the point when the 2000 reel became standard in 1937. Many were of pretty heavy gauge steel, and weighed almost as much as the film they contained. I wouldn't be surprised if some of them are still around today. There were some 5-reel cases occasionally in use, although not by the major distributors. These things were so heavy I heard of film transportation drivers purposely destroying them to prevent their use.
