I use tubs in my theatre as well, always have, always will.
32oz, 46oz and 85oz.
Customers love them compared to the bags at the other theatre in town.

Here is another angle on the cost: It takes about 3 seconds for us to fill a tub - you can scoop with the tub itself by holding it by the bottom - plus no one touches the rim of the tub.
To fill a bag you have to open the bag and fluff it, then get a scoop and "stuff" the corn inside. That takes at least 15 seconds or more.
TIME is money on a crowded Saturday night.
One customer that skips the stand because the wait it too long is way more than the increase in cost of tubs vs bags!!

And don't get me started on the bag leaks, rips, tip-overs on the counter and floor, etc.!!

Only bean counters in the big chains could come up with the bag idea. It sure wasn't we owners that know all the side issues they cause that costs.

Tony, your large is my small! I'm rethinking our sizes now....

If you don't mind if I beat this dead horse just a bit more: what tubs do you use? I mean, what do they actually look like?

Here's a picture showing the tubs we use:

 -

We use 32, 46, 85 and 130 ounce. The 85 is by far the best seller with 46, 32 and 130 following in order. We use the 85 in a couple of our combos too so that adds to its quantity.

A lot of people buy the 130 to share, so even though it's the least popular, that size "serves" about twice as many people as it appears to.

Tubs, tubs, tubs....and a trash compactor to foil the waste company cubic charges.

And don't bags now come with a coating on the inside surface to thwart leaking oil?

are we the only company that is such a whore for advertising? (snip) it's kind of annoying.
Why annoying? Better advertising on the cups rather than on the screen....oh wait...they do that too. If ads on the cups or bags or lobby walls or countertops makes them loose even one screen ad, it's worth it.

Bags are indeed coated but the butter leaks thru the cracks down at the bottom where the folds of the bag are glued together. It's possible to only butter the top of the popcorn lightly to avoid the leaks but there are lots of people who want "extra butter" or want butter in several layers, etc. Hence, leaks.

I think advertising on the cups is useless. Our local Pepsi distributor has been selling ads on their cups for years and I've never seen anybody looking at them or trying to figure out a way to clip a coupon from a cup. It's even worse in a movie theatre because the environment is dark and you can't read the cup anyway.

you can scoop with the tub itself by holding it by the bottom - plus no one touches the rim of the tub.

..as long as the health inspector doesn't catch you doing that ..

..that turns into a critical area and good loss of points on your report - and doing the same practice with drink cups.

Basic law is that no food container should be used to put product in the same container...

Granted, you're not touching the rim, but where has the rim been..in the boxes during shipping and some of them are not in sleeves-this is what the health inspector sees.

...should use a scoop to deliver product from the source to the container.

And imo, if they're going to go down that road with health inspections, they might as well ban buckets in general since they get contaminated just by virtue of sitting on the damn counter and having germs and dust float onto them.

also...if a container is used as a scoop, the hand holding the back or end of the container has a good possibility to be in direct contact with the product, like popcorn, ice, et.al.

why the scoop, or food gloves ... to eliminate the direct contact.

Anybody who thinks the gloves, scoops, and so forth are keeping the food from having hordes of germs on and in it is a fool.

There are germs everywhere and in and on everything, even "sanitary" gloves after they've been exposed to the air for a couple of nanoseconds. This is why we have an immune system.

Your immune system. Know it...trust it.

I just don't like the way that shoving a tub into a pile of popcorn looks. I insist that everyone use the scoop for that purpose.

Ya, afraid that some folks who sees that, will come majorily unglued - be like finding the long black hair in the McD's hamburger thing (happened to my wife and she went totally ballistic - she got a Large Big Mac combo out of that complaint).

Just gotta be careful when handling food around the public...

I've never had anyone say anything about how we scoop with the cup in the 20+ years I've been in the biz.

I actually have the opposite reaction to using a scoop:
Where is that scoop kept in between orders? When was it last washed and how well?
As a consumer I'm more likely to assume that a fresh cup is cleaner than a scoop. If not, then I don't want to EAT or DRINK out of that cup!!

We DO use the scoop for refills, which we do on larges.
We definitely don't allow a used cup into the corn bin or ice bin.

It's tomato or tomatoe - people will like it or not both ways.

And gloves are a joke. I used to own a restaurant, and it is impossible to change your gloves as often as the letter of the law requires. As soon as a glove touches ANYTHING, it is contaminated and technically should be thrown away.
What food place actually changes their gloves between every order they fill?
It basically comes down to common sense, training and enforcement of cleanliness practices.

I think the gloves are a joke as well.

I've seen guys handle food with the gloves, then go and handle MONEY, then go back and prepare more food. It made me wonder if the guy keeps the gloves on even when he goes to the john.

Tubs. Bags are way too noisy during a movie. They throw the NC level all out of wack!
