Well, our bookings changed over my few days off from the cinema!

When I got to work yesterday, my boss looked a little frazzled - he'd been busy mostly all day with advance ticket sales, the vast majority apparently being phone orders. All because we're starting Fahrenheit 9-11 today instead of next Friday!

Yeah, so my night at work was so hectic that I didn't get a chance to inspect the new print until after I had the concession area all closed & cleaned. [Razz]

I know that the Regal Cinema in Brunswick isn't getting this movie, but I don't know about the others in Maine. (The cinema I'm at is also in Brunswick, so we don't run what the Regal runs & vice versa.) [Big Grin]

In Manhattan, Loew's has it in the Loew's Village VII, Kips Bay, 34th Street, 19th Street. AMC has it at their Empire 25 on 42nd Street. Clearview Cinemas at their First & 62nd Cinemas. City Cinemas at their East 86th Street Cinemas. Lincoln Plaza Cinemas on the West Side. Loew's Village VII did around $43,000 opening day and Lincoln Plaza Cinemas did around $30,000 on opening day.

Just to follow up on Chris' mention for Dennis:

Looks like F9/11 is opening on 10 screens here, which is seven more than I thought would get it in this town:

Regal Village Square 18--2 (southwest side art screens)
Century Orleans--2
Century Stadium 16 Rancho Santa Fe--1
Century 18 Sam's Town--3
Regal Colonnade 14--1 (southeast side art screens)
Crown Neonopolis 14--1

I'm surprised the Century Suncoast 16 didn't get it, as they are a northwest side house with art/foreign/indie screens. Will have to scope it out and see what (if any) security is present.

Well, it's playing on 47 screens in this state. [Cool]

I'm going to see it at the "Universal Studios Orlando Resort Loews Cinneplex Entertainment City Walk 20" if that's not enough of a mouthfull. There's supposed to be a panel of guest speakers or something at the 6:45 show.

Regals playing this film in FL:
Regal Shadowood 16 - Boca Raton
Regal Litchfield Cinema 14 - Gainsville
Regal South Beach 18 - Miami
Regal Oviedo Marketplace 22 - Oviedo/Orlando
Regal Royal Palm Beach 18 - Royal Palm Beach

And -- Get this -- It's even playing at the AMC Pleasure Island 24 in Downtown Disney [Big Grin]

I think the significance of my state's role in the election and who our governor is was the reason for so many bookings in the state. I think there is only one theater showing it in Alaska and only one in South Dakota.

I wonder if any screens will be added?

The new IME includes a notation that no Disney or Miramax trailers are to be played with F9/11. Dammit, I was hoping to get some extra exposure for that "Around the World in 80 Days" trailer.

And to think the Chairman of Regal financed "Around the World..." less than $8,000,000 in the first week on a 110 million $$$ investment [Confused] ....will make back the investment as an "evergreen" product on DVD retail sites, sometime this Century [Wink] . A group is in court to ban "F411" since it is a "political ad" and should be resticted under federal guidelines [uhoh] ....Hmmm, I am drinking a Starbucks coffee that warns me on the label that the contents are extremely hot...it is luke warm, got to stop this post so I can consult with my lawyers [Cool]

We've got people grumbling at us because we're NOT playing it. My daughter's getting a couple of calls a day from generally rude people.

There's one art house at the far end of our county that got it. Other than that, it's not here. That's interesting, because Regal and AMC both have large theatres in our area and have screens for everything... even if we don't. On the other hand, we're a military area... wonder if that had anything to do with it??? [Big Grin]

Somewhat of the same thing here too. We're not getting a lot of calls but there have been a few rude ones of late. At this time we are not scheduled for it and probably never will be. I am interested in seeing it, however, and will be watching the Pittsburgh markets for some possible showtimes.

Not to get political but in my area the neo-conservative movement has blossomed big-time among 25 - 40 year olds. Could be some good controversy if we do land it though. [Cool]

Came in today and was quite shocked to see that the first showing in our largest house was half full, second was 2/3 full, and as of right now the 7:00 showing is half full.

This isn't exactly a liberal area either. While this movie probably won't have much for legs it IS doing very good business.

Not sure when the film is released int he U.K, but we are screening it in our cinema chain (picturehouse cinemas) and it is screening at the Cambridge film festival in July.

Heh heh, the fun begins. One fist fight so far in front of the Regal Village Square 18 this afternoon, started after someone got spit upon. People from MoveOn.org were out front distributing leaflets for the first show, but have since moved on... (sorry [Embarrassed] ) Of course the local TV news has a crew parked there, as does LVMPD. Ya just can't buy this kind of publicity. [Wink]

A couple of observations:

Michael Moore fans do not buy a lot of concessions (hence the low per caps).

While I had a lot of people 'thank me' for playing the film at 'my location'. I did receive some disturbing calls from local Republican organizations.

HEY PEOPLE - I WORK IN THE ENTERTAIMENT BIZ - IT IS JUST A FRIGGIN MOVIE!!!!!!!

Returning to the original post from Nate, which started this thread, I'm not clear if he means that some sort of serious trouble, which might justify a police guard, e.g. riot, lynching etc. was thought to be a real possibility, or that if a group of people wish to discuss a film which they have just seen, thatthey should not be allowed to do so without an armed police guard. Either way, it's rather worrying.

Again, I don't understand this; do you mean that in America it's considered normal for people to riot after films, or that discussing a film is dangerous, subversive behavior? Or have I completely mis-understood you.

Do you often see protests outside theatres there? It's very rare here, I can only think of about three or four examples, almost all on a very small scale, by religous groups. I don't think it's ever led to volence.

On the other hand, we do have other problems here, on Thursday night there were small gangs of drunken yobs rampaging through the streets of Croydon, and even the smaller suburbs of Purley and Coulsdon, which is on the very edge of London. A number of shops had their windows broken, and there were injuries. A couple of weeks ago a much larger gang, it was reported as being about 400, but I don't know if that is correct, staged a mini riot in Croydon, and attacked a tram for some reason.

This was all because of some international football competition in which England have been playing.

I don't know much about the film, other than that it's strongly critical of President Bush. I doubt that something similar about a British Prime Minister would be thought at all controversial, a word which almost always seems to be used about this film. Also, if a siimilar British film were made, it wouldn't make much difference which party was involved. Over there it seems that half of the people strongly support the president, and the other half strongly oppose him, whereas here we tend to distrust all politicians equally, whatever their party, or policies. Turnouts at elections are low, and those who do vote tend to do so to try to keep out the candidate that they dis-like the most, by voting for the one that they dislike slightly less.

Given this, I predict small audiences, smaller than for Columbine, and no trouble whatsoever. Unless there is anything in the film about the England football team, in which case there will be major riots and bloodshed wherever it is shown. The film opens here in a couple of weeks time, but I haven't seen any publicity for it yet.

We are currently running F9/11 and I cannot wait until we open America's Heart and Soul next week!

Here's my experience from the day:
We had 2400 people at our (Landmark) theatre today to see this film. We have 3 out of 7 screens in St. Louis and we're only a 6-plex. We have 14 showings a day. We sold out all but 5 shows in the middle afternoon. When our 11:20pm show sold out at 9:20, we added another screen, and sold that one out. (in the past year our latest show has been 9pm) This definately hit a record for the highest gross on a Friday for my theatre. I have never seen such frenzy over a film.

There was a fight between 2 men, started over one 'chewing his popcorn too loud' and ended with 'you slimy right-winger!'

We also invited the League of Women Voters to our theatre and they registered about 75 people to vote.

There was applause and cheers to be heard at the end of all 15 shows today.

Our per-caps were greatly boosted by our late-nite crowd who seemed to have a mean case of the munchies. [Eek!]
3 large popcorns? OK, you want 4 bags of MnMs to dump in there? Oh yeah!

This was my best day ever as a theatre manager. I am so thrilled to see our theatre succeeding with this film.

I guess what I was saying is, I've never seen a crowd react after a film in this manner. Is was like a film club meeting. Many groups of people just stood around discussing the film, some in heated fashion. I saw a prayer group in one corner & other individuals handing out flyers. The mood of the crowd after the show was so energetic & they all wanted to do something. They wanted to make their voices heard. That’s all fine and dandy, but I don’t want them doing it on my property.

Now whether this warrants extra security, that’s up too the theatre owner; hence why I started this topic. If I were running the film, I would have extra staff on, but not an armed security guard. I feel that if you put a guard in an auditorium full of patrons; they will feel like criminals, not guests & may act up. If patrons do get out of control, that is what the local PD is for and obviously if your having re-occurring problems, put the guy with the gun and badge in.
