The July issue arrived yesterday and it gets two thumbs way up from me. [thumbsup] Almost every article is both interesting and practical. This is the best single issue that I've seen in years.

Well, at the risk of discussing politics, the "Law & Order" feature on their lobbying preferences is neither useful nor informative. I get it that NATO hates unions, but to say the Employee Free Choice Act will "thereby eliminate secret ballot elections" is a flat out lie.

I won't defend the NATO articles. Fithian's articles are generally pretty worthless puff pieces. The NATO attorney is clearly smarter and is also a better writer. He usually has something worthwhile to say, although he obviously has his own agenda as well.

From what I can tell, NATO isn't really a very useful organization, and these articles often seem to be an attempt to justify NATO's existence.

Sorry Martin, but from what I've read of the bill, that's exactly what it will do.

In the July issue of Boxoffice Amy Nicholson quoted Millard Ochs President of Warner Bros. International Cinemas. Regarding the IOSONO sound system being tested at Mann’s Chinese Theatre in LA (I thought they were going back to using the Grouman’s name). He said “Imagine a U2 concert in 3D with IOSONO sound. Bono’s voice will follow him around on the stage….”. Since when you attend a concert in person the sound DOES NOT follow a singer around the stage but comes out of a massive set of speakers in fixed positions that causes the sound to come from center stage I wonder if the developers of the IOSONO system are going to cause the sound to be exaggerated or do unnatural things. Have any of you LA Film-Techers heard the system? If so what do you think?

IOSONO seems like another unnecessary, expensive, piece of useless crap that the industry will try to foist off on exhibitors. Once you are 1/3 to 1/2 way back at concerts and cinema it sounds like it is coming from the same general direction anyway.

What will they want to screw us with most, D Cinema or IOSONO?

Since music these days is pretty much consumed by making sounds do unnatural things, this isn't much of a surprise, but I totally agree with you -- it'd sound un-concertlike.

Slapsie Maxicies is gone? I didn't know that. It's now the Beverly Cinema in LA. Apparently a successful "revival" house. Of course they have a couple of million people to draw from. But why couldn't something like it work in a smaller town? That might save a lot of single screeners. Check out the article "Down On The Boulevard" in the august edition of Boxoffice.

Yes, but concerts don't sound like concerts anymore - they sound like recordings with all the EQ, compression, digital effects, automatic double tracking, pitch tuning on vocals, etc. Providing some 3D perspective back into the audio isn't necessarily a bad thing if it makes it sound more like a live event. (Unless they do annoying ping-pong stereo effects.)

Besides, I have been at some concerts that used a stereo PA.

Just got the new one in today and under the Front Office Award section my old DM was nominated. Brian Eichstaedt, congrats to him. But the best part of the article is where my friend Rich talks about the use of Film-Guard and how it saved his soaked IRON MAN print last year.

Just got my December issue of Boxoffice and was reading the Amy Nicholson article "Technicolor's Daring Sidestep" which left me with a couple of questions. The article was touting Technicolors 3D on film as something really innovative. Unless I was dreaming 50 years ago we already had 3D on film. First starting with a two projector interlocked system then eventually in a single lens system. If they're going to put 3D on film again then why would an exhibitor pay the horrendous price for a digital projector. And unless they start making 3D films with good story lines it wouldn't be worth the price for either system. It's not techno-gadgets that will get the movie fan into the theatre.

I wholeheartedly agree. I have been around to see the multiple attempts at 3-D from the two projector system to the present. Like most fads this technology has come and gone... several times, but without much improvement. Through the years, technology has produced some interesting innovations that captivate audiences (for a while), even with the really vamped up audio systems, are we really any better off? The old single speaker-bank systems would vibrate your seat anywhere in the theatre... now it's hard to determine which wall the sound is bouncing off... but, the human ear still only hears the same frequency range. A lot of ado with little end result. Digital projection seems to me to fall in this category too, at it's current level of development. It's just being pushed out too soon, before it has been perfected. On top of it all, the product (films) being supplied to our theatres for the most part leaves a lot to be desired. Yes, we've seen some great innovations in film making... but what about the stuff (crap) theatres have to run in between the one or two classics released within a year. The studios, distributors could better serve the public concentrating on content of the final product rather than whether we have to hold our hands over our ears because of the audio or count pixels from an overblown digital presentation. Fads come and go, making me wonder what other gimmicks we'll see a year or two down the road.

50 years ago? Over/under single-strip 3-D, the likes of which Technicolor is going for, has been around since the '60s and was widely used in the early '80s.

Anybody knows more about studio support for the Technicolor thing (for real, beyond the PR announcements)? The only thing stopping me from getting a couple of screens done is the fear we won't get over/under prints in Spain.

I'm waiting for the price announcements for the new wave of 4K projectors, but I think it's gonna be ludicrous, while the Technicolor could be paid off in a couple of years.
