As some of you may be nearing the end of your career in cinema, I'm just in the beginning of mine. Although I have never been employeed by a theatre, I find the information on these forums invaluable. I learn something every day just by reading. In my quest to open a drive-in, almost everything I've learned about the industry has come from Film-Tech and tons of books. When it comes to "posting", I'll usually only post something that I actually have knowledge about. I tried last weekend to "chat", but found I was way over my head to participate intelligently. When I pulled my first pair of projectors out of about 2 feet of water, I wouldn't have known the first thing to do without the help of the members of Film-Tech. When I bought my first "Booth" back in May of 2000, it was the members of Film-Tech who told me what was a reasonable amount to pay for the equipment. When I needed parts for my obsolete machines, members like Ken Layton and Robert Throop stepped in and saved the day. Sometimes just reading and lurking is better than posting. ------------------ Barry Floyd Floyd Entertainment Group Nashville, Tennessee (Drive-In Theatre - Start-Up)

What Paul said.
This forum has worked pretty well over the past couple of years, with only a few major issues.
The level of moderation here is just about perfect--it's enough to keep things civil by requiring real names and preventing personal attacks, but isn't high enough to discourage people from posting here.
I would tend to be against hard restrictions on age limits and other arbitrary restrictions. Enforcement would be a pain, and the restriction is just about as arbitrary as saying "you must be THIS TALL to post," which, of course, makes little sense. Employment in the industry is, similarly, rather unfair as a requirement for registration; there are many people who would be able to contribute valuable information, but aren't actually employed within the industry. I'm thinking mostly of volunteers, film collectors, and prospective theatre owners (like Barry). To restrict them from participation would reduce the quality of discussion on this forum.
Personally, I'm 23 and have never held a full-time job in the industry. Working in theatres and making short 16mm films (and collecting films) is a hobby for me. I admit to having made a number of dumb posts in the past and probably will make more in the future, but I also have gained tremendous knowledge from this forum, and I would hate to see participation decline if the moderation level were increased.

I'm one of those who are not in the business. My philosophy of posting is to say nothing unless I can contribute to the current discussion. If there is a special event I have experienced, an issue of interest to the group, or some issue that I have research materials (wide-screen or special processes), I will post. I would hate to be banned from this site just because I'm not employed in the industry. As for Andrew, I was bothered by some of his posts, but, as a former middle school teacher, I know he had good intentions. I also think he was enjoying all of the attention he was getting. Middle school students LOVE to feel important. I was pleased at the gentleness of the posts regarding the business plan. I saw a genuine effort on the part of many here (especially Ian) to try to guide Andrew to rethink some of his plans. This forum has one of the highest signal/noise ratios of any I have ever particpated in. We rarely see the "I agree" posts that flood USENET. To me, the key to the success of this board is the use of real names. If my name is on the post, I'm only going to put up something I can back up. Brad does an excellent job of moderating the board, keeping a close eye on things but mostly letting things run their course. I think in this case, just letting things go is probably the best course of action. I don't see a need to change Film-Tech at all. I vote for leaving things as they are. Andrew was somewhat annoying, yes, but he did stimulate some interesting topics and a lot of info got posted that might have been considered "common knowledge" by many of us, but a lot of people (new to the industry) might not have known about some of these things yet I've made a few stupid posts myself, and gotten corrected within hours... which has proved to me that I DON'T know as much as I thought I did, even though I've been in the business over 20 years. We all have our own set of problems and experience level. Even though I've been around a while, I've learned a lot from this forum and I've learned to appreciate some of the problems and situations my big-city colleagues have to deal with. (I've also learned to shut up once in a while! ) As to the signal-noise ratio... if you want to see another side of the coin, go to www.bowl.com (that's the ABC (American Bowling Congress) website) and check out their forums. They allow anonymous posting. I can't believe the amount of useless crap there, compared to here. As everyone else said, I think Brad does a great job here and I would hope that if anyone has a problem with posts of mine, they would take it up with me personally instead of bothering Brad about it.

While I can't say that any *one* of Andrew's posts irratated me, I can say that the moderation here maintains a very comfortabel level of harmony between all of the actual theatre owners, employees, tech's, vendors, etc.. I won't say how I interpreted Andrew's posts, becuase everyone sees things differently. I'm NOT in favor of any rule changes, per say, however, if you would like to implement Sean's idea of "industry affiliation", I'd be all game for it. There have been, at times, posts I would have loved to reply to or comment on, but due to the very nature of working for a major chain, I feel, at times, it is best that I not voice my idea/opinion as it may be misconstrued by others as representation of the company, which is not rightly so. I would like to see teh ability to remove the film-handler. master film handler & jedi film handler tags from the bio pics and incorporate an "industry affiliation' moniker. This would allow one and all to know a poster's tie in with the business prior to ever reading the post(s). Brad, aside from that, I would like to thank you for the site and the time and effort you have placed into providing this for us. ------------------ The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese!

There is a crack out there to give posters 'special titles' other than their name or post count title. The 'Film Handler,' 'Master Film Handler' etc are only related to your number of posts. Why are they there? Simply put, for fun. If you were to frequent other UBB's (Ultimate Buletin Boards, the software that run these boards) you'd see a very different culture. In most places, the focus is on how high your post count is. How many posts to the next level is the main concern for many. This in turn spawns something known as 'spam,' which if any of you don't know is netspeak for useless junk. Poeple just post to increase their post count. So, to wrap this up and get back on topic, I like the current culture we have here, no one really cares about your post count. I, for example, have a higher post count than Pat Moore of Ballyntine (manufactures of Strong and Simplex products), however, I consider Pat to be a much more valuable asset to this forum than myself, no matter how many posts he's made. Adding special titles is an interesting idea. I'm not sure how much time it would take Brad though. The alteration to the UBB code is only two lines if I remember correctly, but you have to manualy enter each members title.

I must have been one of the lucky ones. In the year I have been posting, I have not yet been put down or scolded for being rather young(I'm only 16). In the year of lurking and even more in this last year I have aquired a wealth of knowledge I couldn't even dream of getting anywhere else. I still remember my first post which was rather stupid if I recall. as long as an age limit(if absolutly necessary only)does not interfere with one's lurking ability, than I would be OK with that. Brad, I would like to appologise to you for a slightly steamed e-mail I sent you a while ago. I'm sorry for doughting you discression. Andrew, I was once like you. I also agree that your topics have aroused some rather interesting discussion on the forum. Kick back and read. That's what I did. I admit I have ABSOLUTLY no experience in the management end of this buisness. I currently shovel popcorn at a local 10 plex simply because you have to be 18 to work the booth. I am more of a mechanical person, and that's the way it is. Therefore I keep my nose out of groundlevel most of the time. If anyone has a problem with anything I post please contact me directly. I am rather open to criticism, and hope to learn from any that I recieve. Brad, hats off to you for keeping this site an enjoyable and educational resource for information that just doesn't seem to be avalable anywhere else. I also thank all of the forum members for using their common sense(except for maybe a few instances)and knowledge and sharing it with the rest of us.Thank you all, Joshua P.S. I think Red Green said it best; "I'm pulling for you. We're all in this together"
