Thanks, Brad. That's encouraging to hear. I got the version with Java, not sure why, though. Is Java used all that much? It also came with "Java Web Start", which I have no idea what that's for. [Confused]

I'm really a no-nonsense, bare-bones kind of user, and Opera appeals to me on the surface. Not sure about the Java stuff, though... seems like a lot of fluff.

Java is nice for some fancy web-browser functions. But some spyware browser hijacks like Cool Web Search can install themselves into your machine using Javascript code. Up to date anti-viral apps can block a lot of them though.

Can I add another vote for FireFox

I was (until just a few daya ago) a comitted IE user purely because the several other browsers including Opera and NetScape, usually many releases over, just didnt "feel" right.

Firefox "feels" right.

I say graphical, 'cos I still use lynx as well...

Ditto. I've tried deploying Opera multiple times (different versions) across hundreds of computers and have never been happy. Some machines it will work fine on, others it will crash / act up / whatever like crazy. It also appears that either the developers all got pissed drunk before reading relevant standards or they never read them at all.

FireFox on the other hand kicks much ass and I haven't had any problems on the upwards of 200 systems I've deployed it on. If you want mouse gestures, write a plug-in. If you don't want to write a plug-in just wait a bit, there'll be one out shortly.

Think I'm going to give that one a try, my wife's been suggesting it, too.

UPDATE: Yep! Running Firefox now... it's the one. I agree with David's assessment that it feels right.

Going to give it the acid test over the next couple of weeks, and if there are no problems, I'll be deleting IE for good.

I typically use Photoshop viewing TIFFs, although a $600 app like that isn't a realistic choice for most people.

I've been using Firefox for a couple months now and have no complaints. I ditched Internet Explorer several months ago in favor of Mozilla and switched to Firefox. In all that time I have had next to nothing showing up in anti-spyware scans from both AdAware 6 and Spy Bot Search and Destroy 1.3. I also installed the Mozilla Thunderbird e-mail client. It runs a little slower than Outlook Express but it is a whole lot safer to use. All of the computers at our office now have Firefox and Thunderbird set at the default browsers and e-mail clients.

That's good news, Bobby. I saw the Thunderbird email client on the Mozilla site, but I've never used anything like that for email before (or Outlook). I've only ever used Eudora.

Gordon,

I don't think it's something you did. I can't get the AlternaTIFF plug to work with Firefox, either. [Confused] For those that don't know, the patent images will not open at all online without having the proper plugin installed (the plug is free, tho). They're not 'ordinary' TIFF images, though I don't know exactly what's different about them.

To quote the USPTO info page: "The plug-in you use cannot be just any TIFF image plug-in. It must be able to specifically display TIFF files using ITU T.6 or CCITT Group 4 (G4) compression."

More info, including where to get the free plugin, at: Patent Full-Page Images info

Even when one saves them to disc it's a pain that Photoshop (CS) doesn't map them properly, without changing a non-sticky setting for each and every image loaded (as far as I can determine) .. but lowly Windows Picture Viewer does. [Confused]

The setting to map them correctly in Photoshop CS is: image/pixel aspect ratio/square

Otherwise, PS displays them like a squeezed anamorphic image. Too narrow.

I've been a pretty die hard Safari user for quite some time now.

I'm getting Firefox right now to give it a shot.

The less sheeple that use M$ Internet Exploder, the better!

Sounds like PhotoshopCS bug. I'm still using old and trusty Photoshop 6 and such images display fine there. I suspect the CS thing has something to do with the additions of various video-oriented settings. You can start off a new image in PhotoshopCS using NTSC-oriented non-square pixels, or any number of other video format standards.

The only other tiff viewer that will view them I have found was PMVIEW and it had resolution issues
Photoshop usually left out part of the diagrams

My vote still sits with Safari.

It's snappier, and it takes up less of the landscape on the screen.

Not a bad browser, though. Beats the hell out of aything M$ forces on their customers.

Huh? Either browser can be sized as you see fit. Safari and Firefox run at about the same speed for me. Next to no difference. One thing I hate about Safari is selecting your bookmarks. First you go to the top of the screen and click BOOKMARKS, then you must slode down and select BOOKMARKS BAR and then you select your bookmarks. With Firfox you just click BOOKMARKS at the top of the screen and there are your bookmarks! Yay!
