The people I come in contact with every day know all about me. There are still some people who think that picture hangin on my cubicle wall is my brother... but if they're THAT clueless then I really don't have much reason to talk to them about ANYTHING let alone my dating preferences. I mean come on... I brought my ex-boyfriend to the Christmas party. (although I brought my friend Anna the next two years because my ex-was an anti-social S.O.B.) I dunno though... I feel fortunate to live where I do, in an area that is already used to the idea of same sex relationships. In my work or my day to day life I may have had ONE run in with somebody not so keen on the fact that I like guys. But what about other parts of the country? Being born and bred near San Francisco... Although I am not gay, I am not afraid to admit that I care not for someone's romantic/sexual preference. The driving issue with homophobia is fear and insecurity. Fear breeds hate and insecurity breeds resentment. Hate can then become a dangerous thing when someone feel's strongly enough. I admire all of you who are not afraid to make your lifestyle choices known to the people you work with. Even more admirable is the ability to stand up for your choices when so much hate and fear is passed around spoken or unspoken. Being gay or lesbian is not a choice or lifestyle. These people did not "choose" to go against social majority to be ridiculed and harassed. Society is more tolerant than is used to be years ago, but those that were born gay are finding themselves being the the subject of jokes in movies and TV, being beat up in school and even killed in gay bashing attacks around the world. The religious or radical right would would like to make everybody think it was a disease or caused by Satan. The radical left would like everybody think it is choice. Any rational person if they would do the research will find that it is a natural part of every species the animal kingdom. It is a fact of life...not a lifestyle. I have had many friends beat unmercifully and harrassed to the point of almost going insane. I do not think anybody will "choose" to live their life in world of hatred and fear. Their Bible-thumping is truly just more rhetoric by bigots to probably hide their own insecurities. What a bunch of SHIT! I am appalled by their lack of tolerance and their condoning of violence against other people. Maybe they take their cues from Saddam? Recruitment? Forcing "their" views on others? "Preference" can be boiled down to what someone likes or prefers. It could be predetermined biologically as much as a choice is. As far as lifestyle goes, I do believe this is a choice. While innate sexual orientations are biologically driven, IMHO, what we decide to do about it, or what particular lifestyle we choose, is often not. For example, a person who is gay may decide to marry a person of the opposite gender, even have kids, and live a very closeted life, seeking sex in "hidden" places. I actually know married gays who are entirely open about their sexuality, but still want the so-called traditional family with kids and an opposite gendered partner. Heck, I've known a few that even had their same-gender partners SHARE a house with the marriage. Then there are others who want to live freely and openly, not caring if others in society object. All of these are lifestyle choices that only each person can make and deals with what comfort level they feel from within.  |  IP: Logged
