Hmmm ... I wonder what's going on in Watseka this week ...

Back to the Geocities site for another visit

My friend Bob thinks he's afraid we'll all actually show up and start preaching "Film Done Right" on the street corners!

I can never get any webpages from geocities! Why is that? I use IE and, since Brad`s recommendation recently, Opera. The problem isn`that the pages are displayed incorrectly, I simply never get them.

Can you resolve the domain? Will a tracert reach the host? It could be a routing issue... I've read many times that an insanely high percentage of addresses are unreachable from across the world.

What is a tracert? Pinging?

Probably an ISP issue. Geocities and Opera work fine here.

tracert is the MS-DOS command for 'trace route'. In reality it is pinging but it ping's the router on each hop, not just the final destination.

One graphical route tracing utility is NeoTrace. It's a cool little app that shows (approximately) the location of each router on a map of the world. There is a pretty functional free version you can download, NeoTrace Express.

Anyway, my original point being, ping or tracert www.geocities.com and see if it resolves to 66.218.77.70 (or possibly another address for their international servers). If it doesn't it's probably an issue with your ISP's (or your ISP's ISP) DNS server, in which case I would try using the DNS server of another provider (university DNS servers are usually good to use).

Out of curiosity, can you reach any other Yahoo domains/sites? Geocities is owned by Yahoo and is on their network in Sunnyvale, California.

edit: Looks like McAfee bought out NeoWorx, renamed NeoTrace and nolonger have a free version.

When I run tracert, I get something like this:

Just above line 1, it said something like "tracing route to server www.geocities.com 216.65.115.193 via no more than 30 stations". In Line 17 it says: after the IP address in square bracket "responds: target host not available. Tracing terminated". It`s like this every time even with different dial-up connections. Maybe geocities.com is banned in Germany...
I will download that tool. Is there any logic to the IP addresses? Do you know hao they are allocated. It has to include a hint at the physical location if that is displayed in the tool.

Nice! They actually do have a storefront on the main road but have elected to display the backside of drywall and exposed studs against the plate glass (probably a door there too) and enter at the side. Now why in hell would you do that? It wouldn't have been perfect, but I imagine you could make a brick and glass storefront into a reasonably good small-town theatre. Classy.

With NeoTrace Express, I traced geocities to San José, but I still get no connection with either browser. So I will have to live without the latest from Watseka...I also traced film-tech to a place south east of Washington. Is that correct? I thought film-tech was based in Colorado.

Film-Tech is in Texas. At various times in the past, however, the web site has been hosted elsewhere.

Traceroutes to www.geocities.com will fail before they reach the endpoint anyway, since some router along the way isn't responding to some types of ICMP requests. www.geocities.com (which resolves to two different IP addresses) does respond to pings, however.

You are right. On closer inspection, both traces end with a question mark, so the trace is not complete. Why can`t I trace film-tech when my browser reaches it? I don`t understand why two the identical links you quote can resolve to different IP addresses.

Someone posted this.....Doesn't matter who...."This must be a very poor city, or just have a city staff that does not care"
Well they must have some money down there as they all drive $50,000.00 pickups, $250, 000.00 tractors and $750,000.00 combines around. I am beginning to think that some of those tractors and combines ahve better "built in home theatres" than the Princess II has.

Probably. On the last consumer electronics exhibition in Berlin, Dolby presented a mini-van with LCD displays in the back of the headrests and a surround system. I also got a very nice "Dolby Surround in Motion" bag.

Maybe, just maybe, the owner is broke, and just getting by. He is possibly using something like a Holmes in the booth. How is the image on the 'screen?'

Seriously, I've used my Holmes in a setting similar to the one shown on the website. Painted wall and everything! No wall between the projector and the audience!
After the film, and after I had loaded everything in my truck, the owner of the location told me he was impressed that the film had gone off as well as it did.

I do my changeovers properly. :O

Most of the viewers of the film had seen it on TV in the past. They were pointing and whispering among themselves all through the picture.
Having a selection of lenses helps things. I was able to fill the alloted area without the projectors being out in the audience, for once.

If the owner is broke, then he has no business buying a second building and rigging it as a "cinema". If he already owned the second building, he should have sold it to pay for improvements to the other theater or for walling off the balcony for a second screen or whatever.

In Bruce's situation, it was a setup location for one show only. Afterward, he packed up his truck and went home. I'm all for the fun in guerrilla exhibition on a temporary basis, but this guy has a permanent setup here. (No offense, Bruce. )
