Yet the 2200-seat employee theatre in Kodak Park Rochester is called the Theater on the Ridge:

The college always refers to our Whitman Theatre as the Whitman Auditorium. We never do. No one ever says, "I am going over to the auditorium. Never. Plus they always get the building mixed up with theatre. The building is Whitman HALL; it houses two theatres and lots of other practice rooms and offices. Yet the college refers to Whitman Hall when they actually mean the Whitman Theatre, or as they would call it if they weren't confusing the two, the Whitman Auditorium. The BUILDING is "Whitman Hall," the Whitman Theatre is a theatre it, as is the New Workshop Theatre and other offices, rehearsal spaces, etc. You would think folks in academia would be more precise.

On our website we run up against the problem that, on the very same page we are forced to spell it theatre BOTH ways: The Brooklyn College Theater Department presents: The Glass Manageree at 8pm in the Gershwin Theatre.

So far they are sticking with ER and we are sticking with RE and neither seems about to capitulate. But it's our brochures that go out to the public, so they can call it whatever they want.
