For you I suppose that would be called "Windows" shopping. If you want to kill off a few hours you could sort out your computer... Archive old files and get them off your drive. Clear off your desktop and organize your filing system. Backup your hard drive. Defrag the drive. I lived in Detroit for a year and left town after that first winter. Didn't you just graduate high school? You should be just about ready to go to college now, right? Take that opportunity to move to someplace warm. You could always go back and visit for a week or two if you ever get a hankering for real winter weather. You've got to find a happy medium. In Denver, we get the extremes of both hot and cold, because Denver is an X-Treme city (hardcore!). I was just at a shitty Bronco game last weekend and nearly had to have my toes and head amputated even though I was wearing about 30 layers of clothes even on my feet. During the summer you can't get cool enough, despite the fact that there is no humidity. So How ya doin'? While temps here on the Oregon coast do not dip to those low levels it has been raining a lot lately so I don't go out. It's easy for me to spend an entire day alone in the house (my wife still works) in absolute quiet posting on various sites. Or if I'm done with that I have 288 titles in my video library and can pop in a video or DVD or turn the tube on (although there's not really anything worth watching on very often) or I can just nap. If that doesn't work there are plenty of volunteer opportunities in our small community. In about a month it will be prime for ice fishing. Right now it is prime for 'ice swimming' Dr. Phil... I HATE Dr. Phil. I am not even going to get started. Right now, the sky is dark gray, and there are lake-effect snow flurries. The standing joke is that George Eastman chose to start Kodak in Rochester because in the winter, it is the world's largest darkroom, and it serves as a natural cold storage facility. http://www.kodak.com/US/en/corp/aboutKodak/kodakHistory/kodakHistory.shtml Interesting thing is that both Mortsel Belgium (where Agfa makes their motion picture film) and Ashigara Japan (where Fuji makes their motion picture film) have a climate just like Rochester. When I visited the Agfa-Gevaert factory in 1997 for an ISO TC36 Cinematography standards meeting, I was surprised how much it seemed like Rochester. I'm used to the gloomy winters, and enjoy Nordic skiing here. When I grew-up on the shore of Lake Erie, ice fishing was a regular winter event. Lake-effect snow storms that drop 2 feet of snow in a few hours are not unusual, and the roads are cleared quickly. But summer and autumn in the Finger Lakes region of NY are wonderful, and so are the wineries. And we've had no recent devastating wildfires, earthquakes, hurricanes, or tornadoes. I have never heard of this terminology. You must be a foreigner in our land. Welcome! We usually have pond-effect, puddle-effect, or sink hole-effect snow here. And the effects are fantastic!
