Best Documentary (Feature) -- "The Fog of War." I'd like to thank the Academy for finally recognizing my films! This country went down a rabbit hole in Vietnam and we're going down another rabbit hole right now. That speech was followed by... Billy Crystal: I can't wait till HIS tax audit! Academy President, Frank Pierson, presented a tribute to the recently departed. There were some very AWKWARD moments early on as Pierson experienced verbal difficulties. Recently deceased included an experimental filmmaker, a trailer innovator and Leni Riefenstahl, Russian documentarian among familiar stars, directors and writers. Best Original Score -- Howard Shore for "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King." Moments later, Julianne Moore and Pierce Brosnan presented the Oscar for Achievement in Film Editing to the unstoppable epic "Lord of the Rings." The editor's speech was unintelligible due to his thick accent. Do you know that people are moving to New Zealand, just to be thanked? Jamie Lee Curtis intro'd the nominated song "Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" from her husband's film, "A Mighty Wind" performed by Eugene Levy and Catherine O' Hara. The shuffling, cabaret-style number from "Triplets of Belleville" is, strangely, the most modern of this year's nominated songs. Indeed, a mini-highlight of the whole show. Ferrell and Black presented the Best Song award to "Into The West" from "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King." A glowing Charlize Theron presented the statue for Best Foreign Language Film to "The Barbarian Invasions" from Canada. We're so thankful that "Lord of the Rings" did not qualify in this category! "Rings" was also not nominated for Cinematography. The award went to "Master and Commander," presented by Jude Law and Uma Thurman (looking like an escapee from "The King & I"). COULD SOMEBODY EXPLAIN ALL THE "LOST DOG" COMMERCIALS FOR MASTERCARD? Francis Ford Coppola appeared with daughter Sofia -- "I always wanted you to be a part of the family business" -- to present awards to screenwriters of "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" (Adaptated Screenplay). The crowd went wild as Hollywood couple, Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon, called Sofia Coppola back onto the stage to collect her Oscar for Best Original Screenplay ("Lost In Translation"). The Coppola's are the 2nd two-generation family of Academy Award winners. Jackson thanked, among others, his parents for encouraging him in his pursuit of filmmaking and died recently, never seeing the "Lord of the Rings" movies. Make that 10 for 10 with just one more to go! Please explain these comments...they won't make any sense to the folks reading along at work (or the next day). Sean Penn takes the Best Oscar statuette for his work in Clint Eastwood's "Mystic River." A great-looking Steven Spielberg presented the Best Picture Oscar to "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King."
