Author Topic: Oscar 2004 -- Complete Reporting "As It Happened" Mark Lensenmayer Phenomenal Film Handler Posts: 1605 From: Upper Arlington, OH Registered: Sep 1999 posted 03-01-2004 03:45 PM                     Just a few reactions: Not much energy, that's for sure. Nothing really caught fire. "Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" was sweet, but I really enjoyed the energy of TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE. Marc Shaiman with the vacuum cleaner was a bit strange, though. Most of the outfits were nice...enjoyed Charlize, Julia Roberts and Catherine Z. (But then, I ALWAYS enjoy Catherine Z.) Will Ferrell and Jack Black just about stole the show with the boring song. Sure were lots of Cadillac ads! Why did they play "Hail to the Cheif" when Tom Hanks came out? Some of the musical choices were a little weird. I agree... B O R I N G ! "No way, Morticia never had anything but dead straight hair. " It looked like someone bitch-slapped her. "I'd like to thank the Academy for finally recognizing my films!" What a jerk! "The only really good part was Inspector Clousseau on the parallel bars during the Blake Edwards award" Absolutely a great film and a great choice for a clip. "YAY' RINGS!!! HAIL TO THE KING, BABY!!!" Holy Smokes! Dwayne is alive! Your comment pretty much sez it for me too. "Billy Crystal is a great MC, what a difference to the poor and misantrophic Steve Martin performance." I agree! It was great to see him back. "...stomping on Michael Moore was the best thing in the show." Pretty much EVERYONE liked that much overdue just desserts! While Will Ferrell and Jack Black's tune was "cute" it certainly didn't knock my socks off. I really liked the Blake Edwards entrance. Really hilarious! Most amazing thing: All the security! I had to choose between local danish transmission or a german one, -both live (minus those 5 sec's). As Denmark has a long tradition for ruining the Oscar Galla with studio hosts, unable to shut up for a sec, resulting in noone understand neither the original spoken language or the "translation", i preferred the greman "Pro-7", whicht turned up to be a very nice partner for the nite: Not one word, while the grown-ups vere speaking. Just a very nice studiohost, using some af Your commercial time on comments. This also left room enough to present the "Seabisquit" teaser in every single break. -You saw the teater: Now watch the movie " Plusses: Hepburn, Edwards - and Adrian Brody: I have only seen this really fine actor in Polanski's The Pianist, where he really deserved that 2003-award - but in no way excactly showing stuff for an upcoming comedian. I was so very happy, they gave the honourary Oscar to Blake Edwards. Mr Edwards may not be the hell of a speaker, but so much better for writing scenes to make us all drop down in laughter. His entrance was his trademark - and thanks for that. May his films live among us forever ! (-For Mr Laurel and Mr Hardy" -remember..?) Crystal on autopilot ?? No way. Opening montage as well as musical presentation of the "big ones" were just great ! As someone allready mentioned: Sandra Bullock entered stage just after the "make-up award" has been handed over: What exploded in her face before getting on ??? After so many plusses, one could easy let the few minusse go, but with Crystals big numbers being almost the only entertainment, the result was a bit boring - and that is dangerous, when end of programme was about 06,40 local danish time... -and then, overall: I had a good time with plenty to watch - and the greatest surroundings, You could ask for. I was busy watching Kiss Me Kate and It Came From Outer Space in dual strip Polaroid 3D anyway. Now THAT was an awesome show! Brush... Up... Your Shakespeare... I got back just in time to hear Spielberg say "It's a clean sweep!" I listened to the acceptance speech on that, then I went to bed. Yes, they do go on and on but I have come to expect that from Oscar shows and this year was no different. Billy Crystall was a great MC as usual and I thought the show this year was excellent and although I was never able to follow the plot of "THE LORD OF THE RING" trilogy, I was rooting for it to win all of it's major awards but the film went on to win in every category it was nominated. Right now it is tied with "BEN-HUR" and "TITANIC" with eleven but the two other films were nominated for additional awards. BEN-HUR received twelve nominations and if it was not for the problem with Karl Tunberg's original screenplay, the film would be unbeaten with 12 Oscars. Karl Tunberg did get sole credit for the screen play and was nominated but most of the credit for the excellent film writing belonged to Gore Vidal, Maxwell Anderson and Christopher Fry. Had they been credited instead of Tunberg, "BEN-HUR" would have won all of it's awards like "TLOTR/ROTK" did the other evening. As far as predicting the awards, I correctly picked 20 out of twenty four. I missed on cinematography (I picked "GIRL WITH PEARL EARRING"). Although I did not see "MASTER AND COMMANDER", "TGWPE", a film about Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer had gorgeous photography! I picked "PIRATES OF THE CARRIBBEAN" over "MASTER AND COMMANDER" for best sound editing because I thought the the "PIRATES" soundtrack was awesome. The other two were for animated Short Film and live action short film and not having seen any of the nominated movies, it was purely guess work and I was wrong. -Claude  |  IP: Logged Michael Schaffer "Where is the Boardwalk Hotel?"
