Day 3:

I have no interest in the Atkins Diet except to comment that it seems to be very popular right now.

Exercise so far:

Yesterday I took a 45-minute hike, stroll or as I call it, a trudge trough the local park. There is a paved path right through the center of the park and a dirt trail that goes over hill and dale around the perimeter of the park. It's enough to get me sweaty and breathing a bit.

This morning I took a 2-mile jog on a river path by my house in Cloverdale. I made it about 1 2/3 mile before succumbing to walking. There was a guy walking 4 miniature dogs along the trail, I'm guessing I was 10% faster than he was. I passed him going one way at the 1/2-mile mark and I passed him again when I turn around at the 1 1/8 mark. My butt hurts, my feet stink and I don't love Jesus.

Yesterday I joined Weight Watchers. They have the best reputation and the longest record of success over time. Their general concept is portion control and emotional support. I discovered reading their material that I eat about 4 standard portions of any food I eat.

I discovered that my breakfast yesterday at a normal coffee shop was about half of my allowed points per day. I had two poached eggs, 3 strips of bacon, 2 slices of toast with butter and marmalade, small bowl of fruit, half of the mistakenly delivered hash browns, cup of coffee and 4 standard servings of grapefruit juice. The standard serving of juice for breakfast is 1/2 cup. I had the large, which is 16 oz or 4 times the standard serving.

This morning I had 1 poached egg, 1 English muffin, 1/2-cup grapefruit juice and the giant cup of coffee. I tried to make a 1/4-cup of oatmeal but that didn't work. So I used 1/5 of my total points for the day for breakfast so lunch and dinner can be 2/5 each.

Weight day 3: 298 lbs.

Way to go, Ian! [thumbsup]
Sounds like you're off to a great start and doing stuff that's fun and outdoors. That will keep you motivated.

I wish I had the motivation to do something about MY weight.
I'm way under what I'm supposed to be. People accuse me of not eating and such. I'm 6'3" 150lbs.

Food intake yesterday: Two bowls (probably 4 servings) of Kellog's Honey Smacks with milk, 2 pieces of the Colonel's Original Recipie with cole slaw, potatoes and a biscuit and a large Dr. Pepper, then a steak and cheese quesadilla with large nachos and salsa and a large coke. Then a Nathan's hotdog and a steady flow of soda from the fountain at work.

Exercise yesterday: Nothing, really. Just walking at work.
Weight today: 148! [Confused]

What am I doing wrong?

Thomas,

It will catch up with you one day. Even as late as my early 20's I was 5'10" and weighed <150lbs, ate whatever/whever I wanted, and didn't worry about weight. Now, at 28, I'm at 230lbs [Eek!]

Hats off to Ian and anyone else working to loose weight, its not as easy is it looks.

Yup. Been there done that (age 30: 5'6" 155 lbs, age 45: 5'5" 185 lbs). To quote Bill Cosby: "After forty, your muscles realize you're not going to be a professional anything!" [Big Grin] Everything starts headin' for the ankles.

Three years of sitting and working lots of overtime in a cubicle just about killed me. This summer I will finally be able to afford to swim everyday again. We'll see if I can get back down to where I was at age 30.

I agree Joe... Tom will look like a shemale with BIG boobs from the smokin'!

For me... I'm still at my high-school weight... 6'0", 175 pounds.

However, now, that's just my ass. BTW: The beer-belly is another 52 pounds...

Wait, who says I smoke?? I merely denounce the hypocracies of the drug war! [Smile]

And no, it doesn't cause man-boobies. That's what the fascist, useless and nation-fleecing ONDCP will lead you to believe. Because if people think it causes man-boobies, they will want to keep it illegal, thus causing a windfall for the Prison Guard's Union. Yay, capitalism.
Here's a copy of a book available online for you to read, should you choose to want to know the truth: Marijuana and Medicine: Assessing the Science Base

But enough about what's wrong with the world. Let's get back to what really matters: IAN! [beer]

The fact that you can get out and "just do it" (tm and c Nike, inc.) should be commended. I woke up at noon today, and haven't even finished my coffee by 2pm. Next two hours I'll probably watch a movie or TV until it's time to go to work. Forget going outside for exercise! Even if it IS raining! [Razz]

Watching me lose weight will take up to a year. For more entertainment I'd recommend watching paint dry, watching grass grow or any professional sailing event. [sleep]

Still trying to eat right. Still exercising every day. This morning I shoveled decomposed granite for two hours. I think the pile of decomposed granite will last me all week. [Eek!]

From what I have read, it should take me a year to pull off all this weight. As they say, it took you 20-years to put on this weight, it might take a while to pull it off. But remember my short-term goal is to pull off 20 lbs in 60-days.

I went to my second Weight Watcher's meeting. I have spent the week religiously sticking to my "points."

I have been very active this week. Not only have I been jogging, bicycling and taking walks, but also I have been shoveling 6 cubic yards of decomposed granite in to my back yard. I'm about half done with that little project so I'm guessing that it is going to provide 4-more days of exertion.

The upshot is 289 lbs, a loss of 9.8 lbs from week #1. This is a loss rate I cannot maintain or I would weigh nothing in 30-days. [Wink] I'm sure I will soon ratchet down to the recommended 2 lbs loss per week.

Fast food tip o' the week: 6" Subway Turkey sandwich with all the vegetables and no mayonnaise. (5 points) I think I will go get one now. [Big Grin]

a loss of 9.8 lbs from week #1
loss of 1.4 lbs per day, or 0.93 ounces per hour.

You will probably be able to do better than that once you get to India & contract dysentery.

Why do limes cost more that soda pop?

I stopped drinking soda at work and started drinking soda water with a squeeze of lime. Today I bought a few limes to keep at work and they were 50-cents apiece. What makes limes special?

Why is bottled water more expensive than gasoline?

I am beginning to think that one of the reasons that people eat in an unhealthy way in this country is that fast food, soda pop and prepared dinners are priced so low that it is more economical to eat at a fast food restaurant than to cook for yourself. Obesity in America may be as much an economic thing as it is a health or psychological thing.

No kidding. A six-inch subway vegi costs about 4 bucks. You can go to jack in the box and get a hamberger deluxe with cheese for a buck fifty! And you don't even have to get out of your car!

Ya all need to see the new movie Super Size Me that opens today. This guy eats nothing but McDonald's for a month and he gains weight and comes down with a ton of health problems, and then he documents it all on film. [Razz]

I just joined a new gym called Crunch to lose some weight and get back into shape. They have PEEK A BOO SHOWERS and CARDIO STRIPTEASE CLASSES! [Eek!] [thumbsup] I was going to Club One, but it was so 'sleepy' there (The hippest music they played was The Bangles) I actually put on weight!! [uhoh]
