I’m going to say upfront that this is an awful difficult thread to try and moderate, but I figured it would happen sooner or later, so here goes my best shot at keeping peace.
quote: Joe Redifer It's kind of funny how everyone teases Richard Greco for liking young girls, but liking young boys by other forum members is A-OK. What the hell?
Ok Joe, after reading your post after that one I see that you were actually referring to “underage” girls and “underage” boys, but apparently I am not the only person here who initially read this comment as a bashing against homosexual forum members because (1) the mention of NAMBLA and (2) most of the forum members are guys. Regardless, I received 7 emails in my inbox from 7:44pm to 8:09pm from people directing me to this thread who are offended at your remarks and the deletion of Manny’s post because he challenged your comments in this thread. At this point I feel I need to step in and try to keep the peace between all.
To everyone: there is a policy here on these forums (last paragraph of the FAQ page) These forums are moderated in the respect solely toward personal insults.” Now in analyzing this carefully, it can be argued that Joe did not technically break any rule here on FT. This is because the rule is followed up by “Everyone is welcome to participate in any capacity until the point comes at which other members are being singled out and directly insulted.” However while it can be argued that Joe did not single any specific forum member out by name, he did single out a group of forum members by their sexual orientation. Furthermore, as he was challenged by Manny he did end up singling out a forum member by name. Another problem was that he deleted a post by Manny which was not out of line, nor against any forum rules. However it is clear to me that Joe did that because he was trying to stop this thread before it got too far out of hand. Appreciation goes to Joe for trying to keep peace, but in this instance I feel this needs an Administrative decision.
Personally I think this thread has become a little bit overblown, but just like some people take great offense at religious and/or political issues, sexual orientation is a pretty big one too. Politics and religion is an easy thing to ban to keep the peace, but there shall be no discrimination here. Effective immediately (and put into the FAQ page once the wording can be determined), there are to be no malicious references to sexual orientation of any sort. Feel free to make jokes and such, but please make sure they are not done in a negative manner. Also I might as well add it now before it turns up later, there are to be no malicious references to any person’s handicap or race either. This seems to me a pretty obvious thing in today’s society, but I’m sure I am missing something else. It seems there is always something, but we do our best.
Now Joe is the oldest FT member and has done a top notch job in moderating. No one can dispute these facts. However this is not the first time that complaints have been lobbied over anti-gay comments and innuendos that he has made…and although Joe is the example being used today, he is by far not the only one who has made them. I have tried in the past to let members know off-site that they need to respect the other forum member’s personal business by refraining from making such posts, but there are many members here who are completely anti-gay and they have taken offense at the request alone. So my decision as a solution to this issue here (which is final for those of you who don’t realize that this is my site and I make the rules), is that I am respectfully requesting that everyone who has a problem with gays/lesbians/bisexuals/etc refrain in the future from making any further posts attacking or hinting or making innuendos in any negative way toward their sexual orientation. Again, there shall be no discrimination towards members here. Do note that I said regarding sexual “orientation” and I also said “attacking or hinting or making innuendos in any negative way”, not sex-related posts in general. As far as I am concerned and aware of, that is the only thing that is continually angering and insulting to some of our members, so that is the only thing I am requesting everyone refrain from.
He/she who does not respect this policy shall be banned.
Regarding NAMBLA, as far as I am concerned this is a topic that can do nothing but cause problems. Effective now NAMBLA has been added to the censor filter and is not to be discussed. Also at popular request, the moronic term “teh ghey” is being put an end.
At the request of Manny, the following is his post as originally made at 7:48PM quote: No -- you're clearly stating NOW what you meant...after being pressed by me to say what you mean and mean what you say.
Before, it was open to speculation what you meant.
The argument ends now...because I disagree with you? What are you going to do? Ban me for having principles and sticking to them?
Joe Redifer has been temporarily removed from moderation since this directly affects him. While not directly related to this incident, Phil Hill requested yesterday that he be removed from moderation because he felt he could not honestly post his thoughts and feelings on the forums if he was a member of “management”. Joe will return to moderator status once I get confirmation from him that he is has no issues with this ruling and respects it, which I am confident he will.
Hopefully this was handled in a reasonably respectful way toward the members. If not, I apologize but it’s the best I could come up with to try and be fair towards everyone. Regardless, my rules are final here.
(For further clarification, no one to my knowledge has any issues with innocent gay-themed jokes such as the picture Michael Schaffer posted here. It’s all in good fun, just don’t be discriminating or disrespectful please. )
