I've lived in York, which is about 30 miles from Leeds, for the last five years. I'm not aware of a distinct Italian community in the area, though that's not to say that it doesn't exist.
Thanks to my father being a very serious amateur geneaologist, who has written an exhaustive thesis called Enticknap History and Genealogy, I can give what I hope is a reasonably conclusive answer to the question which kicked off this thread.
quote: Dad's monograph The earliest Enticknaps emerged from the mists of history in the late 13th century. They were smallholders on the bottom rung of property ownership on the feudal system ladder, and they lived in south-west Surrey. Their names appear in property deeds at a time when the surname system was still in embryonic form. A man was as likely to be known by the place where he lived or by the job that he did as he was by his father's surname. I believe the first Enticknaps were known by the area they inhabited.
These men lived in the reign of King Edward I (1272-1307), and were known by a predecessor form of our surname - de Anekecneppe. The 'de' prefix means 'from'. 'Anekecneppe' is formed from two Old English words, of which the second, cnaepp, means a small hill. Expert opinion holds that the first was a personal name, Anneca. So our surname means 'from Anneca's hillock'.
The location of this place is believed to be near the village of Chiddingfold in Surrey (not far from Guildford): there is an Enticknap's Copse marked on the Ordnance Survey map just next to it.
