Not exactly defending him, but he's just a rich teenager (well, a little older I know) who did something stupid - as rich teenagers will do. He probably just thought; "PARTY-TIME!" While it's true he's in the public eye; when you're young and immature, you're young and immature, and no amount of 'logic' is going to replace experience.
Also, those of us who are older, and have fathers who were in the service during WWII, usually heard stories about what they did, so we are more aware why dressing like a Nazi is not too cool. He doesn't have that.
Again, not defending him. Just saying he's more immature than insensitive.

Yeah, I believe he was just goofing off or whatever. Anyone with an ounce of a sense of humor would say, "Oh my God! A PRINCE in a NAZI uinform?!?! Hahahahaha! Great costume, Harry!" Honestly, if a tabloid reporter somehow got access to a Hollywood Halloween party, what would THEY put on the front page if they caught Julia Roberts in a devil costume or Michael Moore dressed up as a nurse??
"SCANDAL RIPS HOLLYWOOD! Julia Roberts takes up Satanism while Michael Moore impersonates medical staff..."
But yeah, good choice of costume if you're a typical dipshit kid going to your friends' party, but not if you're photographed every step of the way... Unless he EXPECTED to be photographed and this was his little "monkey wrench" in the tabloid machine. Too bad it backfired.
Oh, and Joe: quote: Joe Redifer I checked your German and even then it is still a teaser title. However unless you haven't noticed, the language of this forum is English.
If you checked a little harder, you would have seen that I was making a pun of the controversial verse(s) added to the German National Anthem during Hitler. The subject, translated, read: "Britain, Britain, above all [else]?" in the form of a question, which fits with the topic of discussion. It would be the same as, "What's wrong with this lamphouse?"
Feel free to retort my logic with a sarcastic remark flaunting your moderative powers. Still won't make you right. Oh, and do a search for posts in other languages. You'll have plenty of work ahead of you. In fact, I doubt several members' names are in English. I demand they be changed.
Price is right is on.

Note that this is the 'newspaper' that I referred to in the 'beer' thread.
quote: Leo Enticknap He wasn't thinking. Just like he didn't think when he whacked a photographer over the head with his own camera, threw up out of the window of his limo in Central London one afternoon in full view of tourists, workers and everyone and got blind drunk and trashed a pub after some polo match once.
I hadn't heard about most of these. If true, he should come and spend a few Friday and Saturday nights with the lager louts and vodka lout-ettes in Croydon; he'd feel at home here. This sort of yobbish behavior seems to be much more deserving of critisism than the 'nazi' business.
I am totally opposed to the nazis, and everything they stood for, but this seems to me to be a total non-story. Teenager (or is he slightly older than that now?) goes to fancy dress party wearing a nazi armband. Not in very good taste maybe, but hardly something that belongs on the front page of a newspaper. There was some punk rock woman who used to wear one on stage, wasn't there? I don't remember there being as much fuss about her.
Several members of the Royal Family seem to have made a habit of doing, and saying things in rather poor taste; or maybe it's just that when they do it, it gets onto the front page; when other people do it, it doesn't.
I'd be rather more concerned about another member of the Royal Family who, at the time, was at least sympathetic to the nazis, and probably more than that.
Wearing a nazi armband, unless done by an actor playing the part of a nazi seems to say one of two things about the wearer, either:
"I am a nazi"
or
"I am a silly boy"
Since, to the best of our knowledge', the Prince is not a nazi, the latter would seem to apply.
Real nazis are far more of a problem than silly armbands.

That wasn't added during the Nazi time, it was the original first verse of the poem by von Fallersleben which he wrote while in exile because he was a supporter of the democratic movement in the mid-19th century. It didn't originally have the meaning of supremacy above everything else in the world, but was simply a kitschy naive expression of homesickness. Because of the aggressive connotation it acquired later, it was dropped after WWII and now only the third verse is sung.

Of course he does. It's called history lessons. Especially as a member of a so-called "Royal Family" which doesn't have any function at all except as a symbol of tradition and national continuity, he has to be aware of the not-so-distant past, even more so as it is a very unhappy episode in the history of the very country his family supposedly "represents". Apart from that, this era in history is so omnipresent even in popular media such as film and TV, you really have to be a complete idiot not to know what happened.

Well we're not the only ones to keep a royal family, but we do seem to be unique in having a bunch of royals which would make the Simpsons look like a happy and well-adjusted family unit. Apart from The Queen and Prince Philip all of their marriages failed (given the average divorce rate of 30% or so, that generation's 100% record is quite impressive), and of the generation below Prince Charles, only William seems capable of leading a normal (or as near to normal as is possible for the royals) life. For a family which is supposed to act as a national figurehead, just too many of them bring the country into disrepute on a regular basis. Prince Charles keeps blundering into political debates he clearly doesn't have the knowledge to make any meaningful contribution to. As for Prince Philip's infamous gaffes, the less said the better. Harry's yobbish behaviour has been covered. Zara Philips seems to make a point of shagging anything that moves, and of making sure that her doing so receives ongoing saturation press coverage, as did Fergie before she thankfully slipped out of the limelight. Prince Edward decided it would be fun to be a TV producer, so he started a production company which made one or two painfully bad programmes (including one in which he sent paparazzi photographers after his own nephew) and lost bazillions. And the list goes on.
Spain, The Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden and Norway all have royal families; and AFAIK none of them make arseholes of themselves in the way that ours does, all the time. I really can't work out why.
And as for Harry going into the Army, yes, it might sort him out - if he were going in as a private, not an officer. I don't like the idea of someone who gets his kicks out of dressing up in Nazi uniforms being responsible for other people's lives, somehow...
