William, your design left out the slide projector. I bet 100 cfm would make those damn lamps last longer. [Big Grin]

They should fix the inferior design of that Airbus model if it happens that much.
Agreed. Unless I'm overlooking an important factor, six incidents should be enough for engineers to identify the cause and come up with a fix. I hope the issue is not simply that these six incidents haven't killed anyone, and therefore they'll wait until one does before spending the money on developing a fix.

Even when the undercarriage works, A320s are dreadful things. I got one for the first leg of my trip home from California, and the legroom was so stingy that I had a backache for hours afterwards. The DC10 which took me the rest of the way might be a rust-eaten relic from the 1970s, but it was a hell of a lot more comfortable. My only previous encounters with the A320 had been on Leeds to London flights, and since those only take around half an hour I hadn't noticed the poor legroom that much. But after last month's experience I'd try to avoid one for a four-hour flight unless the only alternatives were a lot more expensive. Even the 737s which the 'no frills' airlines use give you more legroom than those things. No wonder the new Airbus megajumbo is claimed to be able to carry 850 people if they pack 'em in at that density.

In defense of the A320 (and as a patriotic red-blooded American I can't believe I'm doing this [Big Grin] ), seat pitch is entirely at the discretion of the operating airline. Airbus just builds them the way the airline customers want them. So Leo, just send your chiropractor and thrombosis treatment bills to the airline that packed you like a sardine into their flying aluminum tube. [Smile]

There have been several service bulletins issued by Airbus for this nose gear problem on the A320. These bulletins are considered a relatively low priority so it can take a while for airlines to comply with them. In the mean time the FAA and other governmental aviation oversight agencies may issue ADs (Airworthiness Directives) for a fix. ADs are mandatory items and depending on the severity can have very short compliance timelines. Like the emergency AD issued just last week against the latest rev of the flight control software on the Boeing 777. That AD requires reverting back to the previous rev. It's got bugs too, but those bugs are understood and there are workarounds. I'd stay off that airplane for the next couple of weeks. [evil]

This A320 nose gear issue is not that big a deal (no one has been killed or likely to be killed in any of these nose gear incidents) so I don't see the FAA doing much more about it than they already have.

The airline in question filed for bankruptcy protection about a week before the flight in question, so I fear that the bill would go right to the bottom of their in-tray. They were even charging $5 for a small can of beer to go with the shrink-wrapped sachet of nuclear waste they euphamistically called dinner - the beer was free on the outward journey, suggesting that economy drives were kicking in with a vengeance. Come to think of it, that's a clever way to boost revenue - only a committed member of The Salvation Army would sit through nine hours in a metal tube without yielding to temptation, and it's not as if you could pop to the rival store round the corner.

I'm on them again at the end of November (conference in Austin), and am just crossing my fingers that they haven't (i) gone completely bankrupt, (ii) crammed more seats into the DC-10 or (iii) traded in the DC-10s for yet more sardine-can A320s - if there's any propsect of getting one of those all the way across the Atlantic, I'll be tempted to bring my own, err, 'refreshments' on board...

The A319/A320 is probably my favourite jet to fly... maybe it's all the leg room (you just need to fly on a super-bankrupt airline Leo). Actually, I think it's how fast the damn thing stops during an autoland.

Oh, and they did fix the design of the nose gear. You either have to buy a new jet to get it, or do it yourself with the SB.

I agree with Paul that not much, if anything will be done to fix the airbus. The airline industry is so fucked up that is does indeed take a death or deaths to get anything changed. They wait until the death actually happens instead of fixing it in advance, even if they know there may be a potential problem with something that will cost a lot of money to change. I think most of the money goes to the pilots (from what I hear their union is quite evil, greedy and VERY controlling), then the next amount of money goes to airplane maintenance.

...at least the dumbass engineers had the common sense to make the gear strong enough so as NOT to collapse when it skidded along the runway w/sparks... [beer]

Unfortunately that's better than what can be said about a lot of design problems in both domestic and imported passenger vehicles sold by the 100s of thousands.

I agree Daryl. But what I meant was, I was really impressed with the strength of the front gear of the Airbus. [thumbsup]

It makes me wonder if THEY knew the weakness of that gear system design and thought to beef it up...just in cae???? (I don't think so...)

I knew what you meant -- I agree.

The nose gear is, by design, one of the strongest components of the entire aircraft. After all, it has to withstand the force of a push truck pushing on the nose gear with the main gear braked or chalked. Not too mention landings by AA pilots. [Big Grin]

I agree Daryl about cars and such. It's all about money. Money is the most important thing in the entire world and absolutely nobody can argue any differently. Human life simply does not compare.

It's funny that money actually isn't anything.
