I think it was Elvis Costello who said that if he ever won a Grammy his acceptance speech would have to be "Now I know I suck." I think the same applies to the Oscars.

So, does anyone know how the technical aspect of the clips was handled? One assumes it was impractical for them to be run on film -- were they from consumer-quality DVDs, or some better source?

I was very impressed with the set. It took some time to figure out if the columns and other treatments were real or CGI, but then figured the stage would be pretty bland without them. I'd be proud to have a theater that had a similar theme.

The overlay messaging they did on the "marquee" above the stage was well-done.

I didn't notice any sound problems with the HD feed, and actually thought that the sound was well-done. Unfortunately, I just deleted the recording of the HDTiVo this morning, so I can't go back and check.

I'm assuming all clips were run from D5HD or better server sources. The clip rolls themselves, both SD and HD, were built using multiple Avid Symphony Nitris systems at Chainsaw Post in LA.

Albeit in a category with only two other nominees, I was pleased to see Curse of the Were-Rabbit win best animated feature. With the past year's tripe it should have gone for best picture [sleep]

I disagree. I thought it looked pretty cool, especially the curved electronic marquee above the stage. It was obviously a custom built LED-based display with a really tight pitch on pixel spacing. Most full color LED-based video displays will have a 15mm to 20mm pitch between pixel centers. That one probably had something closer to 10mm pitch, if even that. Some companies like Daktronics and Barco can build such displays to order. It's also possible this might have been a demonstration piece built to nail down some other much larger sales, like displays for football stadiums.

Daktronics is finishing two huge displays for the Miami Dolphins stadium, one of which will be the Guiness World Record holder for largest video display in the world. The 137' X 50' unit will feature 2112 X 736 RGB LED clusters/pixels, with more than 4.6 million LEDs used in the display. Very very expensive. Not just the unit either. The monthly electric bill will be awesome too.

All of the projectors used were DLP from Barco and DPI. If I'm not mistaken, the main screen was a 2K DLP Cinema projector.

I especially enjoyed the tribute to films in their original scopes.

But when do they start drowning out the acceptance speech for Best Picture with music? Come on - the show's over!

It was based on designs that famed theatre architect S. Charles Lee used in many designs & remodels for Fox West Coast Theatres. It was nicknamed the Skouras style after the Fox West Coast Theatre's president.

It had the misfortune to be just a few minutes before the half-hour (11:30 pm Eastern Time).

Rochester NY is celebrating Philip Seymour Hoffman's award [thumbsup]

DLP technology sucks ass because of the lag. It is not fit for any venue.

I don't know about that. They have tons of people running around the sets with camcorders for the "extras" that nobody cares about on the DVD.

If they only were listing show biz folk who died in 2005, why was Christopher Penn listed? He died in January 2006.

I had contemplated suicide if "Crash" won any awards, but... I suppose when you get down to it I just don't care enough about the Oscars.

I heard something about Ben Stiller appearing in a green full-body-hugging suit and saying something like, "Thanks to the magic of special effects, everyone at home sees only my floating head," when in fact he just looked like Ben Stiller in a green suit. Was that intentional-- a joke?
