Registered: Aug 1999 posted 03-14-2006 12:21 PM                     I'm slowly weaning myself off TV. While in the hospital, I had 18 cable channels to choose from. It was awful. AMC was running a James Bond marathon, etc. I had the dish turned off about 4 years ago, and will NOT deal with Charter Cable again. During my recovery at the folks home, the only channels I watched were Turner Classic Movies, and TV Land. Now, at home, I only have the off-air channels. There are 7 of them. I love "Judge Judy," and one local station plays Andy Griffith for an hour on Saturdays. PBS lost me when our local channel dropped "Are You Being Served," and "Keeping Up Appearances" from its line-up. Local news really sucks big ones, and they all do it for 90 minutes every week-day! When NTSC TV goes away, I will use all my sets for DVD monitors. I watch alot of DVD's. And feeding the drinking habit. I still have my 21" round screen RCA color set to feed, too. However, there are some weeks that I don't watch anything. I read the morning paper for most of my news, and I listen to radio on the way to and from the theatre. I will also check out major stories on the internet. People are often stunned when they talk about a popular prime time TV show and I have no idea what they are talking about. I can't even name one show that is on prime time TV. By the way, who ever replaced Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show? The last serial that I watched was Peyton Place, and I think that was in 65. I consider it to be 'background noise', since I don't usually watch any of it. But I'll make an exception when it comes to Project Runway. I use to love having the TV off, and being able to listen to music, but having worked at a record store for 6 years now, I'm so sick of music that I don't want to listen to it at home. As for DVD's, I own about 40, which are my ultimate favorites that I've seen a billion times, but I hardly watch DVD's anymore since I either see them in the theater or I just don't have time (or want too) to sit down and watch one. Picture tube was installed too tight in its mask. Happened while I was at work running films. Has run well ever since then. Joe: I could do the S-VHS if I wanted. I moved in to a new house in Cloverdale where there is no terrestrial broadcasting. I knew that I was a total slacker and I needed to do the back yard landscaping. So I decided to not buy a TV till I got the landscaping done. Once I got the landscaping done, I had planned a trip to India. I was trying to lose weight, so I decided to put off buying a TV until I got back. Once I got back, my business partner announced that he wanted to buy me out and I decided I might move, so I put off buying a TV until I figured out what I wanted to do. My cousin came and visited me and was so impressed that I lived without a TV that he went home and pulled the plug on his cable TV. I get the Jones about the Olympics but I went on the road for a month and watched the Olympics in Motels and friends houses. I still want a TV, my current favorite is the Sharp 45" 180p LCD flat panel that looks good in the store. I would ultimately like to live where there is good terrestrial TV HDTV broadcast as I object to paying for cable. This in spite of my Food TV habit. Yes, you can live without TV, but much like smoking or desert, I still crave it. I live in hotels, so it is usually only on as background noise to block out the airplane noise, or the "couple next door" noise! If I am watching it, it costs me $11.99 - $29.99 depending on which porn movie I buy! (the all day package is the best value!). I recently went a couple of weeks on the road with no cell phone and no computer. All this did was keep me up all night watching t.v.!! Otherwise, I don't watch broadcast/cable tv anymore (unless my roommates have it on ... but we are rarely awake and at home at the same time). As others have also noted, I use a tv as a monitor to watch DVDs, but if I didn't have one, I'd probably use a computer to watch them. Like some others here, my TV is mostly a monitor for DVD/LD/SVHS playback. No cable in the house though that might change soon since basic cable + internet + long-distance VoIP is now cheaper than our current phone + DSL. Not hooked on any current shows, though I admit to wanting to own all seasons of The West Wing on DVD someday. My roommate is the complete opposite with two PVRs and a VCR constantly recording stuff off of just the local OTA channels, plus grabbing free downloads of certain SciFi shows off of various P2P sites and burning them to DVD. I spent three times in my life recovering at home for long periods of time, unable to really go out. TV was my lifeline to at least the remnants of the real world. When I was 15 I was recovering from a very nasty bout of pnemonia, I spent about three months in front of the TV. While recovering from burns I spend three years in front of the little black box. After recovering from a crush injury, two years. While growing up, I was an insomniac and spent all night watching old movies. I have seen about 15 thousand movies. Far too many TV Shows. I still go to great lengths to watch my "stories". If I forget to set the recorder, I have a freind or family member do it for me at their place, then drop by to pick it up. I once had my EX WIFE record a show for me. Now that's just desperate. The shows I love... At least the ones that make new episodes... Stargate whatever Battlestar Galactica Family Guy American Dad House Lost Simpsons Boston Legal (only when I can catch it, but not all the time) A few others, not much This translates to just about four hours a week on average per year. Other than that, I'm pretty good about it. Coming from watching it 18 hours a day, and on while I slept, it is a very good thing. Ciao  |  IP: Logged
